New PC monitor rcommendation 27"

edited October 2019 in Carrara Discussion

I have had issues with the original monitor since the warranty ran out (naturally!)  It's an AOC I2769VM 27" IPS Monitor ‐ 5ms, 1920x1080, D‐Sub, HDMI, DP  and seems to have developed a glitch with my PNY QUADRO K2200 ‐ 4GB GDDR5, 640 CUDA Cores ‐ 2 x DP, 1 x DVI.... something to do with voltage causing screen to go out.  It did this on test computers at the repair shop, too.  It seems it's just THIS monitor, not the brand or type.  But I am hesitant to replace with the same.

I had problems with the built in speaker as well.  So what would be better?  I do not want to spend more than £200 (US$300)... less if I can.  There is a recommendation out there for the Dell UltraSharp UP2716D, 27″ but that's above what I want to pay. Would I be able to save money by not getting one with built in speaker and getting some separate ones?  I am not interested in sound quality. I prefer to use headphones as my husband usually is watching telly in the same room. I had to buy him a soundbar to get the audio pointed away from my new desk location.

Plus I got him bluetooth headphones for when watching noisy sports stuff! devil

Also, much to my annoyance, the K2200 does NOT have a HDMI port, only the 2 DPs and 1 DVI ports.  Hmmmm.  So I would like a monitor that has a DVI port, too, just in case if possible. Not mandatory, but would be nice unless that puts the price up. I thought DVIs were common?

The unit has been in the shop whilst I was in the US because the power supply has a terrible noisy fan... to stop the noise that comes on when the machine wakes up, I have had to tilt it about 70-90 degrees for a few seconds, then it stops for a while.  The fan evidently sits vertically in the unit and there is a problem with the bearings. Not repairable, and replacement units are not that expensive. It's a CORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS‐650 POWER SUPPLY just in case you have a problem like this. Just bad luck. I love my PC Specialist build... just a bit unhappy that these two things occurred just a few months after it went out of warranty!!!

Any help appreciated.  Remember I am in the UK when posting links for buying a new monitor.

I would go for a 43 inch 4k monitor, it is basically 2x24 side by side, but also another 2 on top :) 2 examples on my watchlist at 500£, a bargain since you get 4 in 1: https://www.idealo.co.uk/compare/5622580/lg-flatron-43ud79-b.html https://www.idealo.co.uk/compare/6217285/philips-momentum-436m6vbpab.html You also get HDR and other modern features too. Did not check the inputs on them though.

    A 29er with a wider 2560x1080 for 240£ with DP and speakers. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B078GL93KG?tag=amazondn-21

Btw, have you tested the current monitor via both DP outputs? The usual double check with other cables and slapping the monitor hard?

They had it for 3 weeks and when I had it home, I did everything...new cables, etc.  Rolling back my K2200 drivers helped a bit, but not much. Stopped using a screengrab programme VVCap. The monitor is just defective and there's no way to repair any voltage issues as the circuitry is not something that can be worked on easily.  I know these folks and I know they tried to figure out what it was. It seemed the monitor was sort of experiecing brown-outs, but not the CPU, when it sensed a 'task' it didn't like..

Thanks for all the links... am going through them now.  yes  Some are out of my price range even though I would love to have them!

I am probably going to give this monitor to my stepson to hook up to his laptop so he can watch Netflix when upstairs away from his big screen telly. That is if it has a DP on it. Have to check.  Hate to chuck it!

ETA  I wish the K2200 had a MINI DP on it, there are converter bits to change to HDMI like the Thunderbolt to HDMI Adapter, Mini Displayport DP to HDMI Cable Adapter

Hmmm....found a UGREEN 10433, Mini Displayport to Displayport, Mini DP Thunderbolt 2 to DP Cable 4K Resolution at 60Hz HBR2, Black, 2m.   Can I apply this to get a MINI DP that I can then connect to the DP to HDMI adapter?  Or will there we a male/female problem, or cause poor signal transmission.  I just wanted HDMI in case.  Or maybe just forget all that and look for a monitor with DVI. There are some out there.

DP is better than DVI, DVI is being phased out... From your card specs: Max DP 1.2 Resolution 4096× 2160 @ 60 Hz Maximum DVI-I DL Resolution 2560 ×1600 @ 60 Hz Maximum DVI-I SL Resolution 1920 × 1200 @ 60 Hz Maximum VGA Resolution 2048 × 1536 @ 85 Hz So the 43ers only run in 4K via DP ;)

Some people cannot use Carrara on a 4K monitor

I know people also who do with no issues but also some who claim they cannot and won't use Carrara because of it, so am just warning there might be issues

    SubtropicPixel is one

I don't have a 4K monitor to know or test and it's made me wary of getting one

Newer Win10 are supposed to have some scaling options for legacy apps. Have no 4K monitor to try on though, there are even 8K now for another 0 to the retail price.

There are plenty of DP to HDMI adapters and cables, they top out at 4K30Hz though. A few claim 4k60 support, check the reviews.

Oh thanks so much for that, Wendy... didn't have a clue. I also do not do animation, so the hi def 4K video aspect does not matter to me.

3drendero, I am narrowing down some choices now and am going to leave them overnight to think. I did notice all kinds of adaptors for the I/O ports and glad because I know now I can give my AOC to my stepson to use with his HP laptop... just need to get one  OR I might keep it and hook it up to this Chromebook for surfing the net. My big machine is Windows 7 and that support ends next year.  I don't know if I can network a Chromebook with a W7 machine, but guess I will find out. At least to share my external hard drive.

    Back tomorrow... appreciate the help!

Oh.... I was reading up on this and it seemed to be about the video resolution...I see now... all those pixels being condensed. I remember in 2008 making a basic html website for our shop. We had large monitors for the time and I though making my graphics and images 180ppi was BIG  What size and density would they need to be now. Yikes!

Good luck! Btw win 7 can still be upgraded to 10 for free. https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

well I knew a Carrara for modelling user with a 4K monitor and no issues on Win7

unfortunately I no longer chat to him to ask

I cannot upgrade this mahine as it has Adobe Creative Suite 3 o it and it will not survive Windows 10.  It's a legit copy and I cannot afford an Adobe CC subscription. I need to be sure I have it as I still do 2D graphics work and my PS is in the sute, too.    The 4K is not essntial... I am hoping to get my corneal surgery this winter, so life shoud get clearer as well!

Here is a cheap replacement for CS3, with 4K support and worth 1000$, for 25$ in charity: https://www.humblebundle.com/software/painter-create-with-confidence Final day, last chance, for real.

Consider a 1440p monitor. While it's not 4k, it's a definite step up from 1080p. & it may be a good compromise between higher res and Carrara being "too small to read"). My 27" iMac is 1440p and it's a very nice resolution to work in. In fact, when I got a new PC monitor this summer, 1440 was the minimum spec I considered (partly because the two screens have to sit side by side). I wound up getting a BenQ 35" ultrawide (3440x1440, 21x9), which is a dream, although the extra wide format is not for everybody.

I got mine in the Prime Day sale. If you can hang on till Black Friday, there's bound to be some good deals both online and in places like PCWorld.

Due to space constraints (only have 24" to play with), I went a different route

This monitor is 16:10 ratio (taller), rather than 16:9.  I will NEVER go back to 16:9.

It also flips to vertical for profile renders.

    Check the reviews.

    Thaks, EVERYONE!

3drendero...I have to keep Creative Suite as I have magazine and catalogue layouts and also webwork I do with a company along with their other desigers, so I have to have the real deal.

UB... thanks for that... wish they did a 27" one! The UK price is OK for me as I buy using dollars and the exchange rate is really in my favour right now. Flips..huh?

Tango.... Do you think we will have a Black Friday in view of all the Brex*hit?  I am not going to rush this... since I know it's the monitor and not the CPU maybe I can get along with it till I find what I really want.  Is your BenQ split screen?  If so, can you explain what that means and if it would apply to a Windows 7 machine?

I don't see why not . . . Black Friday is an American thing, and nothing to do with the EU. And it's driven by the stores, so...

    No it's not split screen, it's just very wide - 21 x 9 instead of 16 x 9. Windows just sees it as a monitor 3440 x 1440

This what I would proabably Buy   27" Viewsonic VA2719-2K IPS LED Monitor with Speakers

You can see all specs here - mylocal supplier  https://www.computeralliance.com.au/27-viewsonic-va2719-2k-ips-led-monitor-with-speakers

I guess I'm biased to Viewsonic as am still regularly using my 1680x1080 which I've had maybe 10years - no glitches/  loss of pixels brightnes colour etc.

I replaced it a while back with Asus then  Samsung - both on the scrap heap long ago.  The othe brand I would have confidence in is Benq and have been considering this

recommended for graphic art 23.8" BenQ BL2420PT 2560x1440 QHD IPS Monitor  ghttps://www.computeralliance.com.au/search?search=BL2420PT

This info from research carried out 18 months ago so there may be other options in my wishlist  now  but Hmmm - I see for me that Benq has$A 100 off just now so tempting !!!

I ASK MYSELF  - DO I REALLY NEED 27 INCH ? THOUGHTS PLEASE

    cheers

Had what sounds like the same problem with an Acer monitor.  Probably a capacitor in the power supply.  It was so common with that particular model, you can buy a repair kit, which consists of a bag of capacitors and a diagram.  One day when I have a couple of days to work on it....

My main machines use Win 7 Pro also.  When support drops next year, they will be disconnected from the internet.  Any installations/transfers after that will be via usb or dvd.  Everything works, and just about all of the Win 7 updates and patches now are for security issues.  Don't want to lose my Adobe software and some other older programs by updating to 10.

Since you have software you can't replace, I would recommend cloning the drive (in addition to backing it up) a couple of times, make sure the clones work (I had a couple that didn't for no obvious reason, second time was fine), then store the clones in case of need.  Saved me once.  Drive got hit with ransomware.  Replaced it with the clone, back in business.

I asked myself if I really need a new 43 4K HDR monitor and the answer was yes. Now it is just the deal waiting time that is left, to keep the consumption process going forward. It is also possible to run Windows 10 Pro and legacy apps in Hyper-V (built-in VirtualPC) for Win 7 in a separate window but like 2 PCs in 1. Another reason for a big screen... https://www.techrepublic.com/article/hyper-v-windows-10s-killer-feature/

0oseven thanks for the recommendations. Here's all the Viewsonics available to me in the UK  https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=Viewsonic+monitors&ref=nb_sb_noss_2    Yes, I need 27... I have had 23 and with vision issues, it makes a difference.  I am leaning to the extra-wides now as well. Not the curved, though.

3drendero  I had heard of the virtual W-7 on W10, but only if the machine is a true W10 machine out of the box and not upgraded.  Adobe told me on the phone that my version is too legacy to run, so I just have to live with it. I wish I'd bought CS6 when it came out... would have been worth it now. Oh well, you live and learn and I did not think I would be using 2D stuff this long after retirement, but I am doing my own story layouts now, so can't give it up. I am like Greymom.

Greymom  our situations sound similar, so thanks for your input. I was planning to do exactly as you say, use another machine for internet and if I download, transfer via stick, or network.  I have not ever cloned a drive.  Does that preserved licence keys/activation information? Perhaps I will have my tekkie to this for me on his bench and then I can put it away is a sealed plastic bag and hope I don't need it!

TangoAlpha  That looks really good. The wide format seems really useful! Is your unit curved? BenQ seems out of my price range unless I do wait till Black Friday.  I guess I worry about supply with Brexit.... deal or no deal. Ugh.

Back to research this weekend... granddaughter again tomorrow and possibly Fridday. But will be following this thread.  Lots of great ideas, please keep any advice coming. If it doesn't help me, it will help someone else hopefully.  The technology has moved on considerably since I bought my then new machine back in Jan 2016!

Again thanks to all... it's been a tough year. Husband is better now, but I need my eye surgery and my back has been buggered since he got ill as I was trying to do too much to keep him healthy. We both struggled terribly on this last trip to the US.  The airlines screwed things up unbelievably and we ended up travelling for 24 hours straight going over.  AND, at Heathrow Airport, because our booking was changed and we were a last minute addition to the flight, tney drug screened me... swabbed my body all over with wands with sponges on the end. Humiliating to be pulled out of the boarding queue. Ugh.  Oh well, sh*t happens.

Mine is updated from 7 and runs Win 10 Pro with Hyper-V. CPU is from 2011, no problems. There still is the old free VirtualPC here https://www.microsoft.com/sv-se/download/details.aspx?id=3702 and the free Virtualbox. You can probably test drive them all with a clone of your disk... This way you also have a backup ready to run, when your old PC fails.
