I do like how the skin came out in this render.

Hi. I just wanted to post to say thank you for this thread. I bought Ryze awhile back and had been frustrated because I couldn't make him look good. I had no idea black skin was so difficult to render so that it looked natural and beautiful. I found this thread and read all of the tips and Sickleyield's deviant art posts and am finally happy with the results that I am getting. I'm sure that there is room for improvement as I'm still a newbie and learning.

Tthank you all for the great tips and inspiration,

    Cathy

Glad to know the thread has been of use. I'd argue that it's less of an issue of directly being hard and more of it being different so the same setting that are used on lighter characters tend not to work.

So I've still been pretty out of it but I do need to get back to updating this. Could someone possibly help in compiling a list on what's become available since the thread was last updated?

A Tyler render here. Here I made a poster, I'm still searching for the original well hidden in my computer. I'll post it here when I find it back.
I used Tyler, my Amazing Skins, an uber environment and a distant (or area) light, and that's all I think.

P3D Tess at Rendo should be on the list. (She's a celeb-look-alike of Rihanna).

Related: I'm only on page one of this thread, but is there a simple way to slightly darken up a skin, without going, unreal?

    - Using general Shaders provided, try to use grey instead of white as diffuse color.

    - Using Amazing skins, just lower the preprocess value (value means brightness), or eventually the postprocess value.
You may also want to adjust a bit the saturation of the skin. You can combine 3 elements to define your "darkness" level : Diffuse color (associated to diffuse map) preprocess value, post process value (both in 01HSV settings, the first one will change the value-or brightness- of the diffuse map, the second one the total final calculated value (brightness)).

    Arise, undead thread!

I've been improving my rendering with some things I learned from other folks at DAZ, and also playing with Amazing Skins, which has no nubian presets by default but is VERY nice for this use. Behold Rob:

    http://sickleyield.deviantart.com/art/Elite-Rob-G2M-in-3Delight-with-Amazing-Skins-483983996

And the lights and skin preset I created for him: http://sickleyield.deviantart.com/art/Making-of-Elite-Rob-M4-Study-483984007?q=gallery:SickleYield&qo=3

I attach another pic with that same shader in slightly different lighting with the Benjamin skin (the specular came out a bit drier than I wanted, but it still works decently).

Very nice thanks for sharing :)
I also shared your link in a topic I'm opening so that people can share their personal presets.
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/48815/
Just for information, there is in amazing skin a hidden parameter useful for dark skins. The label is "Value 2ForSpecVal", to see it you have to show hidden properties and hit "spec" in enter filter text.
This dial says how much you are going to increase the value of the diffuse map (the one preprocessed) before considering it is the color of the specular color. The default value is 1.1 which is fine for caucasian / asian skins. For Dark skins, increasing it will make a more "clear" specular and generally gives better results. You can also increase "add tint to specular color", but this dial gives more amplitude to the color range you can access for the specular, and on second level the main SSS (which color is partially relying on specular one).
    I hope this helps :)

Here's another render with Neo for D5. I'm using G2M almost exclusively now (it's really down to the HD morphs for me), so I tried converting the Neo morph with GenX, but unfortunately the transfer was not close enough and had some issues with the top lip being creased (although I got the textures to work, eventually). So this is Genesis, and still looking good!

This is a Luxrender render, via Reality. The lighting is IBL, which is also the background. It's Newport Loft by Christian Bloch at HDRLabs.com (free but attribution requested). There is a tiny bit of front fill with a fairly distant mesh light. Postwork consists of adjusting levels and blurring the background in PS, as it isn't quite high-res enough (although it does a fantastic job of lighting).

Haven't added them yet but I did do something else. First post already hit the character limit once so I finally copied the info over to a Google Doc. What I plan to do is update the doc instead of the thread, add it to the first post, then re-add the various rendering tips that had to be cut for space. In the future, I may also convert the doc to a spreadsheet so finer details can be better categorized. At the moment it's pretty basic but looking for opinions before I alter the first post:

Thank you for the forum to post these images.

I am posting for two reasons. First, in support of the thread. Second, please inform me where to go in the 3D community to get technical input on obtaining realism in renders. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, maybe a skin-study where members of the community download an object and texture and tweak the texture to obtain realistic results and report back their findings.

Such a thing may not exist, but I thought I would ask. thanks!

magnumdaz - It would help if you were specific about which software you are using. There are more specific forums for the various tools that might be of more help than The Commons.

    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi guys, and Zam :coolhmm:

It’s been a while since I’ve been around and I see it’s been busy. I’m hoping you all can help me with something. I need the identification of several morphs and hair. Please see these morphs below. For the last one I’m just looking for the hair.

On the front page of Daz3d.com there are two morphs that are just beautiful but I can’t ID them or their hair. The product is A Bit of Mystique but I’m not interested in the masks.

See: http://www.daz3d.com/0211-bit-of-mystique The artist is PandyGirl but of course I don’t know how to get in touch with this person.

Whatever you can tell me I will be eternally grateful. Thanks Guys,

    LJWM.

Pandygirl can theoretically be reached through PM. She's got an account in the forum, but I've no idea how active she is. Her forum ID is just "pandygirl" (no quotes, of course). Since I can't find a promo thread for her recent products, I'm guessing that she might not be terribly active, but it's worth a try.

I've no idea what any of the morphs are. I know that, while the last one is, as noted, wearing Calais hair and ruff 2, it's not the Calais morph herself.

They might be also personal morphs that she only uses for her promos, and doesn't make available for sale.

That said, you might try checking Lyoness' store. She and Pandygirl seem to work together a bit, and it looks like she uses Lyoness' products in her promos, so it may be that they're from that vendor.

Thank you guys so much. I knew if I list them here I could count on you to help me out. I'm going to check on the info you gave me. If anyone else have more information about these morphs and hair I would be so very thankful

It would be nice to have promo lists here as they do on Renderosity but I know there are thousands of products that are old and there's no way someone is going to go back and list all the products used.

it's so hard to find great looking African American morphs (especially males) that when I see one of either male or female I have to get it. Thanks again and anymore information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for this. It's the right one. However, I was hoping the hair could lay more flat but it looks like it's a "surreal" kind of hair for fantasy renders. But thanks again.

    Number 1 is Julius hair.
    http://www.daz3d.com/julius-hair-for-genesis-2

Thanks SereneNight, you nailed that one. It sure is.

    #2 looks like Olympia.
    http://www.daz3d.com/olympia-for-genesis-2-female

tjohn, for some reason this doesn't look like Olympia to me. It's possible that it is but the skin texture is darker than for Olympia and she looks Black. Olympia doesn't to me. Usually when there's a darker or African American morph version they are not as nicely created as the White version. The skin texture is really badly done and the features are very unappealing. That's my reason for asking. These morphs are beautiful and too hard to find otherwise.

Correction: I think it is Olympia. Olympia 6 as you indicated. She's a new one that I was familiar with. Thank you again.

FYI, it looks like Reciecup's rendercandy site is gone. All her products are on Rendo now. The freebies are all MIA, except for Naeima.

Thank you for the heads up. Redirected her link to to her Renderosity page. I may try messaging her on Rendo to see if I can get permission to reupload her freebies to ShareCG. I should have most of the characters. Probably also going to ask about allowing permission to possibly update/edit a few.

Currently in the process of updating the list and then putting that link on the front page. I may request assistance but I'm gonna try to get back active again

True, but it is possible for the Wayback Machine to hiccup if not have the link outright overwritten. Besides, it probably doesn't hurt to ask.

Separately, now that I've added the link to the Google Doc to the first page, I've now had space to add some of the tutorial links back to it.
