i cant remember how to cut and stitch for a uv map ?
detach polygons don't seem to work, when i move it, it drags the edges so it stretches.
tried the + and - buttons on the unfold tab. think those are pins.
how to make a clean break when detaching edges for an unfold?
Thanks

Deep subjects like these often require a bit of a lengthy, but good explanation.
Who better to provide such a talk than our very own Diomede! Here, Diomede takes us on a nice journey through the process of UV Unwrapping
Thanks
having serious brain farts. can't remember how to export texture template. or the button is hiding from me.
wante to see if i can use other nasa images on the mercury planert. looks like is mapped to a perfect square.
Model room > UV tab > Operations
Bottom of page, I think > Export
But also in the UV tab, we can make selections on the mesh to determine where things are mapped, and how.
Might be worthwhile to revisit this UVMapping thread. I'm always forgetting some of the details.

how doo they map a sphere to a square jpg?
oh sweet mytheries of 3d, another fine myth
spherical render
reverse the normals and render inside the sphere
real life photograph all around the sphere and use a scanning software like 3Df Zephyr
also spherical projection in UV mapping does it but Carrara is crappy at it, most other UV programs do it easily
mercury is looking lovely with square texturemap
but a lot of the nasa photos are rectangles >.<
when i unwrap a sphere, i end up with pointy bits on the top and bottom. no understands how they do it. there's special software for unwrapping spheres?
or mebbe start with a plane and deform it to a sphere?
nah, would cause distortions
finding hits for blender tutts

For the 2:1 ratio rectangular maps, just use any of the planets in Carrara: Scenes > Space
They all (like the Backgrouns map in Carrara) use the 2:1 ratio maps
on spherical maps and distortion...

There is also an option to use spherical projection in the shader's top level, but I've never tried that.
was just thinking if we had an alpha mask for earth's individual continents
could cutout and blimp and shape it to a sphere.
what ya call them maps that spin? some people put their liquer bottle in em
globe! thats the word my brain fart lost doh
