Using DSON With Poser
Hi guys, I have a question about using the DSON Importer with PP 2012. I bought the DAZ V5 Elite Ponytail a good while back before realizing it was for Genesis (I didn't really understand what Genesis was at that point). I had trouble figuring out how to set up DSON at the time and just threw it all to the side.
However, I recently had another go and I've now got the importer itself working. However, when I load the hair, the prop loads just fine but the materials aren't there. It's white. It renders fine if I manually add the textures one by one in the mat room but that is an agonizing process and I don't know the exact parameters it is supposed to have (ie. transparency and bump settings, which image map should be assigned to which part) so I can only take my best guess to get it looking acceptable.
In another case, with an outfit, I loaded it from the library and it showed as being present in the scene (as in, you can select the outfit and body parts from the dropdown) but it's not actually there. I installed all of the standard Poser Runtime files that came with the product to my usual Runtime folder, and can access them from the library. I didn't know what to do with the DAZ stuff (the data and people folders) so I just copied them as-is to the root of the same Runtime folder. Before that, I had them in the main Poser directory. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
Just to clarify, I don't want to use the Genesis figures themselves at this time; I just want to use the few hair and clothing products that I have, with other figures. Does that make a difference or does Genesis have to be IN the scene for the outfits to load? As I said, the hair loaded, but without the automatic textures. The outfit didn't load at all as far as I can tell, even though it can be selected from the figure drpodown, which is bizarre.
Obviously I'm missing something important here. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? With DSON, I had hoped to be able to use Genesis hair and outfits that allow for importing to Poser but I don't want to risk buying anything else until I know what's going wrong. Thanks!

You need to install both the Poser files (PoserCF) and the DSON Core files as the former has only the library files, the latter has the geometry and texture files. Though I don't think that would account for the hair issue - I will try grabbing the current version tomorrow (I think mine is still the original) and see if it loads correctly for me.
Hmm...thanks for the info. Where should I put the DSON core files? Are those the ones that appear in the data and people folders? If so, where should they go? When I use install files (for Poser runtime content anyway), I install to a new folder on my desktop and then rename and drag to the appropriate section of my runtime folder one subdirectory at a time, for organization reasons. So the Poser files are in the right place but I guess I'm not placing the DSON files into the right directories.
Also, just to make sure, there's no way to use a Genesis product in Poser without the companion files, right? For instance, there's a freebie outfit on Renderosity that I really like but it's for DAZ only. In that case, there's no way to import it using DSON, correct? Just want to make sure I understand everything :o)
DSON core files go into your main Poser directory. http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dson_importer/poser/userguide/dson_installation_requirements/start
Maybe that was worded incorrectly. DSON was installed to my main Poser directory. I was referring to the files that Richard mentioned above - the non-Poser files that come with an individual Genesis product in the "data" and "People" folders. So if I install the elite ponytail to its own temporary directory, I get a Runtime folder, which contains the Poser library versions of the hair, materials, poses and textures, and then there are also two other folders: data and people.
Are those the DSON files that Richard mentioned? Where do they go? I placed them into the main Poser directory but the textures aren't loading with the hair prop, and nothing seems to be loading at all with the outfit (as I said, when I double click on the clothing figure in the library, it seems to load something into the scene because the figure appears in the dropdown list on the upper left and I can select it and the individual body parts, but the actual figure is not really IN the scene, which I don't understand). So I must have something set up incorrectly.
You should install both parts of the product to the same location, so you end up with a folder named "Data" sitting next to the folder named "Runtime".
Okay, progress! I was completely ignoring the Support folder. I assumed "Support" meant PDF help files and the like, so I didn't bother with it. So dense. Once I dragged it into the Runtime directory, the "invisible" outfit loaded just fine. It loaded without the texture but I was able to do a one-click apply in the mat room. The other outfit I have loaded in full, texture and all, with no problem.
The hair is still loading without the textures though, and the mat files don't seem to work. I love the hair but I hate to have to manually texture it one part at a time, simply because I don't know what all of the right settings should be to make it look exactly right. Any ideas on that that? Were you able to try with your own version of the V5 Ponytail? I've heard of certain Genesis products requiring manual application of textures in Poser, so I'd love to know if this is one of them or if it's me doing something wrong again.
I've run into another problem as well. There don't seem to be any morphs when importing a Genesis outfit. For example, I load up a figure (a skirt or a coat) and the only dials it shows are for scale, rotation and translation, no matter what body part I select. And aside from scale, they don't even seem to really affect the figure when changed. I had assumed that a variety of morph dials would be available (body shapes, movement, style) but I've never used Genesis products within DAZ so maybe I'm just not clear on how the items function. Am I missing something else here?
Sorry for all of the questions and thanks for your help. There are certain Genesis products that I really want to buy but they're on the expensive side and I'm afraid to take that step until I know I've got everything working!
There may be hidden morphs for shapes, so that they automatically match the figure the clothing is on. Whether there are styling morphs will vary from item to item - but the lack of morphs, and the lack of textures, if it's general does suggest the installation may not be correct yet.
