A small bone to pick with DAZ

Now I don't want to be too negative. I've avoided this forum for a while because some time back it had gotten so negative.
But I can't resist pointing the below out. I am a happy Carrara user. I own 8.5 and 8.1
I didn't really need 8.5, ( I don't deal with human figures) but I bought it for two reasons.
1) They added a feature I requested ( Keyboard shortcuts for "play" "advance frame" and "back Frame")
This allows me to use a shuttle pro controller when animating.
2) I wanted to support DAZ, I like Carrara and have a lot of time invested in learning this software.
I assume that they need people to pay for it to make development worthwhile so I bought the upgrade even though I still do most of my work in 8.1 ( just wanted to work didn't want to deal with any changes or that fast mip map stuff, even though I bought Fennric's plug in that fixes the issue)
The gripe
If you look at the DAZ home page they show a software comparison. They don't even bother to list Carrara in this table. ( see attached screen shot) It would have been easy to list DAZ FREE, Then Carrara $xxx then lightwave, Maya Etc. and let the viewer make a choice.
So my question to DAZ is if you don't bother to support Carrara and Advertise it in an obvious place on your own web site.
Why should I support Carrara?

You are correct that it had been getting pretty negative for awhile. Fortunately the last several months have seen a great improvement in the attitude around here.

As to the matrix, this has been discussed already. First off, it's a terrible matrix with a glaring inaccuracy regarding LW.

For what it's worth, my theory is that they wanted to put competing software on the graph. Carrara and Studio are both DAZ 3D products. If you put Carrara on there, it could muddy the waters a bit as it is in their stable.

That being said, the other reason it is so horrible (and more compelling to me) is that they have Studio on there at all. If somebody was curious and knew someone with one of the other titles such as Maya and asked about the chart, you would hear the derisive laughter on the moon. Carrara is a more apt comparison to those other programs than Studio, Sure, you'd still get the laughter, but at least it would only reach the ISS. ;-)

Edited to correct and add some stuff to the last paragraph.

I've been lurking and noticed the positive vibe around here. It's also nice to see 3DAGE, yourself, Dart, Holly and other people giving advice.
When I started Carrara I would not have been able to do anything without the help I got here.
    (and sometimes still need it)

    HI 8068 :)

I hear you,. but as for "Why isn't carrara in that comparison list", ...that would be negative advertising....

when you have a comparison,. it's usually to show that "Your Product" is so much better than the others.
It's never a good idea to include your other product's in that comparison too.

in glancing at that chart, it's easy to see that the only things separating Daz Studio from 3D Max is the ability to model and texture.

while that may be technically correct,... in a way,...
It's actually a million miles away from the reality that Max is much more powerful and complete suite of 3D tools.

So, from a newbie's perspective,. getting all these tools for free in DS,. seems like a no brain-er, and a real bargain.

They may never use Max or Lightwave etc, but they will remember that DS was free, and almost as good as those very expensive products.

I'm not trying to defend the way that Carrara is being handled as a Major 3D product suite,.
just trying to explain the psychology used in marketing comparison charts.

Since DS was created it's always been the Daz3D "golden child" ...next to the flame haired orphans that are Carrara,. Bryce and Hex

    As for software development funding,.
The bulk of Daz3D's income, comes from the sale of content,. and that's what funds development of the software.
the overall sales from 3D software aren't enough to fund it's development, and the main software products like Carrara, Bryce, Hexagon are often reduced (heavily) to entice new users. which further reduces the income generated directly from 3D software sales.

    Hope it helps :)
