How to create an idle animation?

Hello everyone,

So I am sure this is a very simple thing to do but I am trying to create a idle animation of my character, (see attachment) holding a sword as if he is getting ready to attack. I tried using the puppeteer tool but the animation didnt look natural and it didnt seem smooth either.  I also will like to create an animation with him walking while holding this sword in this position.  Any assistance is greatly appricated.
