Making a bump map of simple lines

I'm trying to make a bump map just drawing simple black lines and shapes on a white background and then uploading that as a texture, but for some reason nothing is happening. When I upload other JPEGs (images of anything, really), the bump map responds fine. Is there something special I need to do if I just want simple shapes on a bump map texture?

Thanks

First thought is that texture maps require some sort of UV in order for the bump to show.

If the texture map is an island stuck in the corner, it won't show. It has to be spread over the desired surface area of the object.

One can UV the object in Carrara and then export the UV map to a texture area where the white background and black lines can be painted on to it.

Or, one can use the procedural materials in Carrara to make the lines.

So this is the image that I made in PS to use as the bump map. Maybe I'm missing something, though? Like, if I grab any image in my pictures folder and apply it as a bump map, Carrara will read it. But when I upload this, nothing.

I'm not sure what the procedural thing is you're talking about in carrara.

Welp, dunnno unless you are not putting the bump texture in the texture map of the bump channel.

Edit: Glad you figured it out. One of the left is negative bump, one on the right is positive bump.
