--Closed Voting Thread!--Aug. Carrara Monthly Challenge: SIZE MATTERS!--Closed Voting Thread!!--

Follow this link for complete rules and the WIP thread!

This challenge is meant to help depict one of Carrara's great strengths. The ability to use its tools to create either really close and intimate scenes, or really massive world size scenes, or even combinations of the two. So this challenge is all about depicting scale. It doesn't matter if it's a giant scale or a microscopic scale. What your image needs to do is to make the viewer feel the scale. It should almost have an emotional impact and make the viewer say, wow!

Extra special thanks to DAZ 3D and RingoMontfort for sponsoring this challenge!

To see how these amazing peices of art were created using Carrara, please visit the WIP thread! It is not required, but it would be nice if you could include any comments about the entries when casting your vote!

Voting begins now!

The rules for voting are fairly simple.

Each person may vote for up to three entries.

Votes are per entry. If an artist has two images you wish to vote for, you may use a vote for each one, leaving you with one remaining vote to cast.

An artist may place in the top three, plus HM (Honorable Mention) only once. If an artist has enough votes to place more than once, the entry with the most votes will be the one that is placed, and the entry with the next highest votes will be moved up.

If there is a tie for any spot in the top three (plus HM,) I have asked three respected and objective forum members to act as tie breakers. I have asked that they refrain from voting during the regular voting period. If the same artist places in the top three with their entries tied, the above mentioned forum members will break the tie.

If there is no tie, I will give the tie breakers a chance to place their votes. If their votes cause a tie, I'm screwed. ;-)

Anonymous votes will be accepted with good cause. Please PM me if you think you need to vote anonymously. An example would be if a forum moderator or admin wishes to vote without giving an appearance of favoritism. There may be other issues as well.

I've asked the very talented RingoMontfort to name the Honorable Mention. Feel free to suggest your own, as it may help him with a very difficult task.

If there are any questions, please ask!

Important addendum to the prize list: 1st Place winner gets the horror- I mean HONOR of hosting the next challenge. The winner gets to choose the theme and the rules. I tell ya' It's enough to make an atheist pray. Just kidding, it's almost not that bad.

To see the complete list of prizes that RingoMontfort and DAZ 3D has donated, please see this posting:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/44033/

Dates To Remember:

WIP Thread open Sunday, July 20th, 2014 and closes when voting begins.

Submission Thread Open on Saturday, August 2, 2014.

Submissions close and thread is changed to voting thread on Friday, August 15, 2014, at around 8:00 PM U.S. Mountain Time. (Oops! I missed that deadline!)

Voting ends Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at around 8:00 PM U.S. Mountain Time.

Thanks again to our fine sponsors, DAZ 3D and RingoMontfort for sponsoring this challenge!

    Content created:
    Display Plinth Glass
Desk (you can only see a small portion of the desk in the final image, you can see a screen grab of the full desk in my WIP posts)

    Postwork or any plugins:
Unfortunately, the way Carrara handles DOF, even though the glass display cover that is mostly transparent, can be a bit of a pain. When processing DOF, Carrara treats the clear glass as a surface that should be blurred. As a result, everything inside the display glass gets DOF blur (grrrrrrrr). To rectify this I had to post process (composite) the render. I did one render with DOF, one without, then clipped out the areas that shouldn’t have blur in the no DOF version, and pasted then into the DOF version. I also had to re-add the DOF blur to a few areas in the non-blurred image. Composting was done in The Gimp.

    No additional postwork was done.

    —Optional Notes:
The character is a custom V4/G4 character with a lot of additional morphs, and a custom Skin texture based on a merchant resource. Also, a fair amount of shader work was done to make everything look "right"

Best when viewed at full resolution!

    Title: 'Rats, Hunter Street.'

Content: Stonemason Urban Sprawl, PhilW Night and Day City, Noggin's rats.

Created Content: Three different hair objects on rats, disco ball (I know i should be embarrassed)

    WIP: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/44033/P255/#662276, http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/44033/P165/#657679

Post work: rendered out depth pass, coverage, object index, primitive passes, shadow pass. In post flipped the depth pass and made it screen parameter. Used object index, coverage and primitive passes to isolate foreground, blurred background, painted out anomalies with clone tool, took primitive pass, changed parameter to screen and used that to zap up the hair. Took whole into oloneo hdr to crisp it up, then hit it with a Romance Plugin to make it all snuggly.

thanks to RINGO et Evil and Daz again!! Well done evil, a fine challenge you ran, congrats to everyone who played, the work is magnificent, !

    Artist: Antara
Title: Size matters: Difference between life and death.

    Credits:
    Content:
-Rabbit and Owl from Poser Animals pack.
    -HDRI is from Dimension Theory
    Modified Content:
-Grass and Flowers are butchered objects from Howie Farkes
    My own created content:
    - All shaders on everything (some use textures, which came with content, some use my own textures).
    - 3 objects of rabbit fur with 1-4 hair groups each. All custom cut, brushed and shaped, custom shaded. I needed 4 objects because each object uses different general hair properties (thickness, scale, stiffness, etc).

    My votes-

    #12 by Headwax.
    Title: 'Rats, Hunter Street'
Apart from the fact that its visually arresting, I like the way the image plays on the size theme on different levels and the simplicity with which it was made.

    #2 by Pimpy.
    Title: World Creators.
Actually gets you to stop and wonder if that's not how the universe is being made, very apt for the theme and neatly done.

    #9 by Philemo.
    Title: For some, size matters.
The POV brought the scale to life. Like that brick wall texture too and the technique used calls for some experimentation.

    Honourable Mention.

    # 10 by Stezza:
    Title: Money for Nothing
The perspective does justice to cramming as much into one shot as possible and heightening that 'sky falling on our heads' feel.

Sorry I didn't compete (again!). I really thought I'd have the time but issues at work spun out of control. Haven't done much 3D at all lately. Sad Panda...

But I loved these entries! This month's contest really inspired some spectacular work. My list kept changing as I looked at each entry!

    Here are my choices:

    1) DustRider - A Moment Frozen In Time (my jaw drops every time I see this one)
    2) Philemo - For some, some sizes matter (beautiful texturing)
    3) Antara - Difference between life and death (love the reflection in the eye)

    Honourable Mentions
Head wax - Rats, Hunter Street (love the camera angle and perspective)
DUDU - A town in a drop (wonderfully creative idea with the macro shot)

Frankly; everybody else deserves an honourable mention. This is how my list ended up though. One day I'll get through a contest myself!

pimpy, Entry #14 is by DaleHardman. Did you mean to vote for his work?

My own votes (Since we cannot assign weight to our votes, I arranged them in order of entry # increase):

    * Entry #2 Artist: Pimpy Title: “World Creators”
Excellent play on the theme! I love the surrealism of it and the semantic implications. Great composition and execution. Wonderful image! I completely fell in love with this image, the moment I saw it.

    * Entry #6 Artist:. Diomede Title: Pirates in a Rum Bottle
Great idea! And excellent details. I love it when every element of the image supports the overall idea, and this is just one of such tight detailed images. From unpainted figures to the tiny brush to the paint smudges on the newspaper and the bright electricity lighting -everything is just right.

    * Entry # 12 Artist: Head wax Title: ‘Rats, Hunter Street.’
Lovely lighting, composition and mood. Great sense of vast emptiness enhanced by the tiny subjects' POV.

Question: Do we get to vote for HM? I didn't see it mentioned in the rules, so I am not voting for one here. If we are allowed to vote, for HM, please let me know and I'll add the HM vote here.

Great many thanks to EP for excellent hosting! And to RingoMontfort and DAZ for supporting this wonderful challenge. Best of luck, everybody!

    Hello Antara,
RingoMontfort is choosing the Honorable Mention. There are so many great entries that if you have a suggestion for HM, it may help him to decide. It is non-binding, but I'm sure he will appreciate the help.

Congratulations everyone! All the submissions are awesome. This is a great contest. Thanks EvilProducer for organizing it and to Ringo for the prizes. I think the WIP requirement for the contest was brilliant. There is so much great information there.

I wish I had 15 votes -- one for each submission and one for Evil Producer's contest and gorilla WIP. Thanks so much for providing the gorilla dynamic hair file as well.

Since I have to narrow it down, here it goes in numerical order:

#2 Pimpy, World Creators -- I wasn't quite sure what was going on in the image at first. Then, I expanded the image and had the "Wow!" moment when the vastness of space hit me. Love the terrain contrasted with outer space and the sense of scale created by that and the creators rolling the Earth into the pit.

#7 Kashyyyk, Jumping Spider -- I have a real soft spot in my heart for jumping spiders. Great use of dynamic fur. I love all his furry bits. Really nice sense of scale created by the size of the plants, soil granules, and DOF. I especially like how much of the scene was constructed in Carrara.

#12 Headwax, Rats, Hunter Street -- Gorgeous image! The sense of scale from the closeup rats to the massive city is very effective and really nails the point of the contest. Very good use of DOF. I also love the color palette and the lighting, especially the rim lighting through the rats' fur.

    Good luck!

Edited to add that I learned about the WIP thread and call for votes through the Commons.

I haven't been following the WIP thread (though I should go look for some hints as I'm the novice-iest novice there can be in Carrara) but I saw the call to voting in The Commons so came to take a look. My choices (somewhat unfettered by any knowledge of what may be simple and what may be really complex to achieve in Carrara) are:

Entry #12 by Head Wax "Rats, Hunter Street" (so real that "ugh!" I don't really like to look at it for too long!)

Entry #2 by Pimpy "World Creators" (love the concept and the scale)

Entry #1 by DustRider "A Moment Frozen in Time" (right at the other end of the scale! Glass looks very tactile)
