My first 3D render!

Hi all,

i'm new to 3D in general. Daz seemed like a great place to start, and I finally finished my first render and would like to know what your thoughts are, your suggestions and ideas to make my rendering look more realistic.

Let me know what you think.

Best,

Oliver.

For a first render, I'd say you're off to a great start. Good composition, good lighting, good use of depth of field, nice expression, and a bit of flare added with the blowing of the hair. That's a really good start for a first render!

All I could tell you at this point would be to keep learning, fiddling, and challenging yourself and refine your skills/technique. There's a lot that you've grasped already for someone new to 3D, so I don't have much of a direction to point you in, as you don't seem to be struggling with any particular concept based on this image. Depth of field is tricky to learn, so I'm told, and you've done very well here, so that's covered. Lighting is usually the big one, but this has a very nice setup to it, with highlights and shadows and contrast, so you're on track there as well. If you did the lighting yourself, then great job! If it's a pre-made light set, I'd say fiddle around with lighting, experiment, pick sets apart to find out what makes them work. Learning lighting is fundamental, though if you've done the lighting on this yourself, you're well on your way!

As for realism, you're pretty well going to get a different answer from anyone you ask as to what characters to use. Bluejaunte comes to mind for very realistic characters, as does isourcetextures, Mousso, Emrys, and some of the DAZ base characters. I like to mix them together to find something that works, but I've seen people make quite realistic renders based off of more 'stylized' characters, so it all comes down to what you do with them. A good HD morph (Kala 8, and Khemsit 8 are my current favourites for those) will help quite a bit, but you'll need the material settings to back it up. The vendors listed above will give you a decent starting point, but ultimately you'll have to dig in and find out what works best for you, and then you'll need the lighthing to go with it.

That is a very good looking first render.yes I think you will do fine.

By the way, you have your own gallery here on Daz website, ready for your images. It is a very convenient place to build one's portfolio. Others will see your gallery images in the Gallery section of the website too.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask them in the appropriate forums section. The community here is awesome, you will get people flocking in to give advise. My first would be to learn how the sales and the shop itself work. You can save a lot of money if you plan your purchases and wait for sales. If you can afford it, definitely get the Platinum Club subscription. The savings are immense in the long run.

It looks VERY nice! You'd laugh at my first render years ago. I'd lighten the eyebrows to better correspond to the blonde hair. I also think the freckles are a little overpowering and distracting.
