    It's almost summer, just a couple of days away and it's the season for singing ( albeit bad singing ) cicadas ... they are that noisey it's hard to stay outside whilst they sing away.

    used the surface replicator on a plane mesh modelled and textured to blend in with the background photo I used ( which is mine ) .. The outside dunny I modelled, headphones from Carrara objects folder and retextured, Daz dog adapted to use in Carrara with blended weights, lizard and cockatoo from Ken Gilliland at HW3D, I  Modelled the cicada and violin as well. Plants/grasses from various resources.

    Thanks for checking that out Stezza.  Nice to know there is a way to do it.  Then again, with no apparent maps, it forced me to explore other options.

    Amazing cicada, BTW.  yes  I am well aquainted with their loud droning sound.  But not this time of year in the states, or course.

    It still seems odd to me that you are in the beginning of summer!

    Wendy clued me in to the League of Legends freebies (OBJ) a few months ago.  These are amazingly detailed models, but not super easy to use.

    I had a play with Urgot a while back.  I changed out a weapon, and added some displacement grunge with Carrara paint. (mostly luck)

    Coloring was almost all by light, as there are no UVs.  No Postwork

    if you have Hexagon then you can import into that and then save out as a Carrara file and open in Carrara and colour it in and remove stuff   wink

    I don't know what you did to the bottom image but it glows with sumptuous warmth.

    camera > depth of field > set maximum

  • Lot of good stuff here so far. I'm a bit intimidated as a returning Carrara user. I've decided to use this competition as a way to refamiliarize myself with Carrara. I used to love working in Carrara, and it turns out I still do. 

    This is my interpretation of Seasons. In this case, change of seasons on an alien planet (need to find a name for it). Had fun playing with the surface replicator. Also, a lot of texturing fun going on here. :)

    Still working on lighting, and I've got some more modeling to do (in Silo, I could never get my head around Carrara's modeller). Also may play with some dynamic hair/fur.

    Season's Greetings

    used various models randomly chosen from Smart Content tab... amazing how much stuff I didn't know I had is there!

    also used several models I made over the course of the year. Used Carrara'a text tool and Howie's Christmas tree and also 3dU elf & Santa.

    a touch of postwork was done in PSE20

    A Man For All Seasons

    I've been looking at medieval artists recently, like the Dutch and Italian masters.  It's fun to do renders of this period, as Daz has a ton of old medieval products available, with amazing textures.

    The title refers to a stage play by Robert Bolt, a play which was later turned into a couple of movies.  It is the story of Sir Thomas More, the 16th century Chancellor of England, and his opposition to King Henry the 8th's demand to divorce his wife and marry the daughter of his mistress instead.  More was steadfast in his refusal to sanction the event, and lost his head as a result.

    Bolt got the title from a contemporary of Thomas More - Robert Whittington - who in 1520 said in admiration: "More is a man of an angel's wit and singular learning. I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness and affability? And, as time requireth, a man of marvelous mirth and pastimes, and sometime of as sad gravity. A man for all seasons."

    The render scene is just my imagination.  Didn't happen that way, of course. :)

    The set is mostly the old Throne of the Wolf King, heavily modified.  The window was made using Philemo's Cutouts plugin.

    Starting on the left, the characters are D3 (the monks), the Priest is M3, the kid is K4, the women are V1 and V3, Henry is M4, the guy bending forward is M3, Thomas is Lowrez cardinal, and the executioner is F3.

    Carrara hair was used for Henry's beard (kind of a waste, because it worked very well but is hard to see).  Other process include GMIC (for canvas texture, contrast and grunge), Carrara light cone, lens flare, and aura.

    No postwork.  Please double click for a bigger size.

    Keep up the great work, everyone.  Sorry for only commenting on the most recent few.  

    - Spectacular, UB.  ahhhhwowowowowuh!!  You nailed the Dutch masters effect. 

    If I may make one suggestion, the king's head seems off.  Even if Henry is meant to be facing the peers instead of Thomas, might be better to pretend the peers are to one side.  Right now it looks like Henry is pointing at Thomas but looking over his head at nothingness.  IMHO, better to have the king either looking at Thomas or definitely not looking at Thomas.

    - Stezza - wacky wonderfulness.  Your latest wacky character is quite a ballbanger.

    - gypsum - he should have stuck to the TV.  Great job with the waves for the bottle, etc.

    Thanks, Diomede.  My intent, to some degree, was to have him imperiously looking down his nose at Thomas.  Perhaps it was less successful than hoped. :)

    I appreciate the comment, though.  Will experiment further.

    Nicely done Stezza. I like how your Cicada critter has its own music stand. And the dog with earphones on, lol. Great meshing of 3D and background photo.

    The above is a closeup of a newer version (which I swapped for the old one.)  I tilted his head further back.  You can see he eyes are more downcast here, but it will be less obvious in the smaller full version.  Other than the body language, not sure how to make it more obvious.

    But I do like this version better.  Thanks to Diomede for getting me to look at it closer.  Still open to suggestions, of course. :)

    Oh dear, that's quite a different scene from the previous lush soft focus sunshine.
    I don't know what the sign says as a warning either. Maybe he suffered from watching the television? cheeky

    Very striking and sobering image.

    Great pose and I love the complimentary curves of the plant shapes. To me at this stage is reads as joyful. Nicely work.

    Wow UnifiedBrain - great composition and use of multiple figures! 
    Lighitng, textures, all look great and integrated. The very background figures even look painted - almost glazed in with very little detail,  like a painting.

    And another clever use of "Seasons". smiley

    The closeup looks really nice, but I don't think at all that it's 'better' than the whole scene. To me, it's the opposite. The full scene is a masterpiece, I think. The closeup is a cool render, but isn't as dramatic.

    If folks aren't noticing him "looking down his nose", it's because that sort of attitude might be better conveyed with a different expression and pose - like head-cocked and rolling his eyes with his hands o his hips. Even in the closeup he looks more like he's barking orders.

    Just two cents about your comment, not the image. Both images, to me are fantastic. But I do like the full scene painting better - just my opinion.

    Dart, you misunderstand. It is a closeup of a newer version (which I was able to swap in the original post before anyone quoted the post). Still using the full scene. The closeup was done just to show that the eyes are looking down. Anyway, thanks for the comments and suggestions. And thanks DesertDude, for your comments as well. Much appreciated, all. Hopefully I can find time to comment on the other renders.

    You do these ensembles better than anyone.  They always look fresh and creative.  I wondered if someone would do a Seasons Greetings.  It seems like most entries are targeting clever ways to use the word "season," and not so much other interpretations of the theme.  No complaints, as I am in the same boat.  Just an observation.

    Did you use the Panos filter on this?  It looks like it (a bit).

  • Great renders. Some very interesting ideas. 

    I have a question. I'm really wanting to use DCG's Anything Grows plugin for this project. My problem is I haven't used it in so long and I've forgotten how. Can anyone tell me specifically how to control where the strands grow. I'm thinking I need some sort of distribution map, but I'm drawing a blank. All the tutorials I've found (and there aren't many) don't really show this step.

    Thanks in advance. I'm having a great time, and I'd really like to use this plugin to accomplish a certain task. It would be much quicker than modeling.

    Not sure what weirdness happened to my post above to Dart.  It won't even edit properly.

    David, I haven't used the plugin yet.  Stezza seems to have experience with it, so maybe he will chip in.

    Edit - The editing functions aren't working normally in this post either.
