Carrara 8.5 on Mac OSX 10.9 crash
Hi people !
I have the problem that Carrara 8.5 doesn't run at all on my Mac with OSX 10.9.
After entering the serial number or selecting the trial mode the software just crashes with a very long crash report !!!
I am trying now since one week to sort out this problem with the help center from DAZ, but I just get standard answers or no answer :(
In the DAZ wiki they recommend to use the 64bit version for MAC, but they dont offer the download link for it !!
In my product library I can only download the 32bit version .. !?!??
And because of this, of course I was till now to able to check the recommended Carrara version :(
So, finally that means that I bought software which doesn't work at all on my Mac :(
Hopefully somebody here is having a proper solution for this disaster ?!
Many advanced thanks for your help, BR Thomas

Hello Thomas,
sorry to hear about your issues. :(
Can you tell us if you bought the Standard, or Pro version? I think the Pro version is the only one with the 64 bit version of Carrara.
There have been people that have used the 32 bit versions on their Mac. The names escape me at the moment.... Anyway, it may help us to know which Mac you have and its specifications.
There have been some issues in the past with the serial number and permissions not working as expected, so some people run as the Root User to enter the serial number (don't forget to disable root user after you're done). I don't recall reading about crashes, just that the serial number needed to be re-entered every time Carrara was launched, although it is possible there is some sort of conflict that causes Carrara to crash.
I should add that if all else fails, DAZ 3D does have a 30 day money back guarantee.
Also, if you have the standard version, you may be able to upgrade to the pro version if your budget allows. There are other advantages to the Pro version, such as more features, network rendering, etc.
If you do have the standard package, get a refund and buy Pro. It's only $15 more at the moment, and you get an extra $100 worth of content (V5/M5 Pro bundles) yet alone the extra Pro features. No brainer really.
Having said that, make sure you give the DIM installer permissions when it asks for them. It should put Carrara inside the Daz 3D folder in your Applications folder. It worked for me flawlessly, but I do have Pro. (Side note: I wonder if this is related to the installer bug that prevented Howie's Harpsburg from installing properly? It might be worth mentioning this bug to support and see if it jogs anything. Quote reference 176094 and also point them to this thread)
Thx for your pretty fast replay :)
Yes, I have the standard version, but I am willing to upgrade it now ... if this will solve my problem ;)
But unfortunately I dont know how to upgrade ... via the help center ?
I attached a complete crash report .... probably this will help you guys.
Btw. I tried now also to install Carrara as an standard user (not admin) and same here ... same crash :(
So, for me its obviously not related if I am installing as the admin or an standard user ....

You may need to enter the serial number as a Root user. This is a super user- above administrator, and it is very important for your security to go back to administrator when you are done.
Apple's support documentation should tell you how to do it if you search their site for your OS version.
There was an issue with Carrara, admin rights, and the registration code, but that was back with v7 IIRC -- 8.5 doesn't have that issue. Like others, I use Carrara 8.5 Pro on 10.9 without issues (well, mostly :) )
I think the issue with C7 and the admin thing was with Windows if I recall. I do know that I read about it for Macs with C8.5, but I'm not sure if that was just for the beta.
There's this thread that seems to verify the C8.5 issue, though the OP is a bit, shall we say, mercurial, and no longer posts here for various reasons.

Speaking as a user of OS X who has 7 on up I can safely say that 7 had the issue with privs. In fact, just to make sure my memory was correct I ran it just now (I never did go through the contortions to make it stick) and it still asks for the information on launch.
I have no idea about Windows and admin. I never experienced an issue, but switched to OS X a few years ago.

I still have C7.2 on my Mac, which is still a PPC and have never had the permissions issue. It may have been due to changes in the OS and lack of changes in Carrara that caused the issue. Be that as it may, Rich wasn't the only that had that issue with C8.5 from what I have read.
I have C8.5 Pro running fine on a Mac with 10.9. No problems with the install. Downloaded DIM and installed from there without a problem.
I assume you are using the DIM to install?
It might be good to delete everything and try again. There are apps for uninstalling applications; things go everywhere and it can be a pain to look for them yourself.
Also, have you updated your Mac OS? I can't recall having any hiccups, but I know for certain Carrara works fine under the latest update.
Edit: I have Carrara Pro and use the 64-bit version. You need administrator privileges to install; I have never needed root.
I also bought C8.5 Standard and have issues with it installing on my Mac. I also have 10.9 installed. I put a bug report in to DAZ and they offered I try the 8.5 64-bit beta version. Anyone know where this might be?
Also, I think that after having paid money for an upgrade, I should be offered something other than a beta... >:(
Beta or trial? I don't think the beta version is available anymore as C8.5 has been released.
Yeah, I'm not sure what was going on there either, but like thomas.theurer I was looking for a 64-bit version of C8.5 and only saw a 32-bit version. DAZ's solution was to have me get C8.5Pro. I didn't really want to get C8.5Pro tho'. I wanted to cheap out and just get the standard version. Still thinking about their fix. Anyone have any advice to help tip me over one way or the other?
So People !
I solved my problem now .... and again thx for your help :)
Its pretty easy, the 32bit version of carrara 8.5 just doesn't work at all with OSX 10.9 and even worst .... even DIM-64bit isn't able to handle the 32bit version correctly !!!
The 32bit version of carrara will cause in every case on my OSX installation an fatal error which always ends up in an immediate software crash after entering any Reg.-Key !!
The 64bit version works perfect, equal if you are installing with or without DIM :)
So finally its easy .. if everything on the system is already 64bit ... use 64bit carrara ... the same thing with 32bit .... just never mix it ;)
I know that OSX is able to handle this mixture ... but DAZ and DIM unfortunately isn't able to handle it :(
To my person:
I am working now about 25 years with Apple hardware and about 30 years as an software developer for embedded systems ... and after this long time I got in touch with the worst help center I ever had .... DAZ is neither providing sufficient answers or help in every way nor providing sufficient descriptions that a customer is able to chose the right software for his system ... very bad ....
Anyway ... finally I sorted out my problem ...
I wish you all the best and a lot of fun with 3D modeling ;)
Glad you got it sorted out. I would never have thought about 32 bit being problem... I have only used the 64 bit apps.
Now that it is up and running, have fun!
Hi,
working with Carrara 8.5 Pro (64 bit) since years on Windows, I bought it right now for MacOS running on a Macbook Pro with 10.14.2 (Mojave). Problem: As soon I want to add a character to a scene (e.g. Michael 5), the programm crashes. Here are the first lines og the log:
