How to weld "non-object" items? Baffled.

I'm futzing around with a prop that I imported as OBJ file.
It's a single object in the tree, but it has separate sub-items.
I can "select" the sub items by selecting a face and growing it to max with shift and +, but for the life of me I'm not able to convert that selection into its own object so I can weld them.
Is there a technique to do this?
Thanks.
PS: I am currently tediously welding two vertices at a time, all the way around the seams. It's driving me insane. There has to be a better way, right?

Make the selection. Hit ctrl+x then ctrl+v. Now you have separate objects.
Take notice though that if the object already have a uv map it will be collapsed when welding.
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
