The 8.0 maps can be use don 8.1, like any 8 maps. It hasn't been updated to natively support creating mat files, and it hasn't been given new maps for the Genesis 8.1 UVs.

It's definitely problematic. The difference in materials, not just UVs, seem to be making it impossible to get a good result. I've loaded a G8 female and done the changes with her, then tried copying the materials to the G8.1 figure, but the difference between torso/face and body/head is falling apart at the seams. I've tried using "Base female' for the UVs, but it still doesn't fit. Any suggestions? As far as skin goes, G8.1 seems more like a complete generational difference than an update to an existing one.

    No and it won’t be.
You can use the G8 skins on 8.1.

Except that little, minor, problem that the script won't run against a Genesis 8.1 figure. So, for example, you can't see how the skin will look when applying it to the Genesis 8.1 character you're trying to make a custom skin for.

And, yes, it is a HUGE problem to have to load multiple figures and bounce back and forth between them. There's plenty of morphs for Genesis 8.1 that don't exist on Gensis 8.

They probably don't want to brand a new figure "Genesis 9" until DazStudio 5.0 ships.

So even though the difference between Gen 8 and 8.1 is far, far larger than Victoria 4 to 4.2 it still gets the "8.x" branding.

  • I was hoping Zev0 would release a Skin Builder for 8.1, as others have pointed out the difference in additional maps, UV's body/neck changes (which even make ShanasSoulmate's Inked series usless in certain body locations), and the inclusion of Tear Lines, make it different enough to warrent one.

It is very problematic when you can't even load a G8.1 specific character's UV onto a G8 character, to utilize Skin Builder on it, then transfer that skin to 8.1. If it were as simple as that, I could understand the lack of need for a script. But if Zev0 isn't interested in capitalizing on it, I suppose that's their perogative. Still, it's a real shame.

I'm, not sure what youa re trying to say here, since Victoria 4.2 was an incremental update to Victorai 4/4.1. If you want to cite a minor chnage that was released as a new figure I suppose Victoria and Michasel 2 would do, since they were essentially morph sets for the previous generation (but we didn't have the techniques for adding morph channels back then). Genesis 8.1 is clearly not a new figure - it's an incremental update, adding only the new surface grouping compared to 8 (new UVs could be added to Genesis 8, though the head/body split as needed for this particular UV set) but taken as an opportunity to roll out some other enhancements.

I would imagine Genesis 9 will be kept for something that makes actual changes, rather than tweaks. Whether that comes with Daz Studio 5 will, I would imagine, depend on what new features make the initial release.

But the differences between Genesis 8.1 and Genesis 8 are comparable, if not larger, than going from Genesis 3 to Genesis 8. I recall people complaining on DeviantArt that the only real reason for the change from G3 to G8 was marketing and the same was said about G8 to G8.1. And, really G3, G8 and G8.1 are all cross compatible with only relatively minor changes.

But, for the case of Skin Builder, simply updating the script so that it can grok a G8.1 figure as input, even if it just outputs G8 textures and UVs, would be more than enough for me. I've gotten to the point of loading one of the PBR skins onto the G8.1 figure, then manually inserting the G8 files into their relevant locations.

I'd settle for a UV swap script.  if it's the same figure with the only change being the uv's

There was a chnaged zero ose, though that probably didn't entirely make sense until we had dForce. In any event, the only chnages in the Victoria updates were the addition of the brow bone and the way that morphs were delivered.

If it useful, here is the exact quote from the creator, Zev0:

Not updating it for 8.1. Build skins on Genesis 8 Female and apply it to 8.1. The different UV on 8.1 causes all sorts of issues building skin natively on 8.1. You can still use normal Genesis 8 Female UV (which Skin Builder is designed for) on 8.1.

It's not the same, 8.1 gets a different shader it's not just a matter of uv set. That's probably why Zev0 is not willing to update it would be too much work.

It's not difficult at all to transfer the shader from 8.1 to 8 or 3.

I am thinking if you could replilcate the Victoria 8.1 skin using Skin Builder 8 you could then create your Makeup for a 8.1 model.

Here is what I am trying to do.

I have an 8.1 character, In order to get the Male Genitalia for Female to match the skin I loaded the Victoria 8.1 skin on it, all the maps, including the maps for the gens. Using the Ultimate PBRSkin Manager I am then able to get the skintones I want on the model, including the gens. However the Makeup I created with the Skin Builder 8 product creates a skin that does not match up with that 8.1 skin I have on my model. Attempts to use the skin made from Skin Builder 8 to match up the gens using Ultimate PBRSkin Manager do not give the desired results. (It ends up being quite bright, tone wise.) If I could replicate the Victoria 8.1 skin settings in Skin Builder 8 I think I could then create the makeup skins I want and place them on the 8.1 model and then using the Ultimate PBRSkin Manager get the desired results I want.  It has been suggested I use add-on third party gens but they don't look right to me so I want to use the gens provided with the 8.1 model.

I guess what I am asking is can anyone tell me what the settings would be in Skin Builder 8 to repllicate the Victoria 8.1 skin.

    Thanks

The textures skin builder uses are made for G8F UVs, which is why they don't match V8.1 texture which uses G8.1F UVs.

Maybe you could use Map Transfer tool in DS to create a "G8 UVs" version of Victoria 8.1 skin maps, and use your skin builder overlays over that version?

  • leo04leo04 Posts: 336

I tried that. The issue is you need to have the settings for the skin to make the overlays.  What has to happen is you have to build the skin first to do the overlays. (see image one.)

Since I am using the Ultimate PBRSkin manager to get my GF8.1 skin and male genitalia for female to match up, I then have to get those settings to work too.(See image two).

I am loading the GF8.1 model then loading the Victoria 8.1 All Maps to it.  This gives me an overall skin plus the gens that I can then use the Ultimate PBRSkin Manager to change the skin to look as I want. I can then save the settings to a text file that I can also apply to the gens, and make all the skin match up.  The problem is the program does not write new maps just modifies the existing one somehow (I don't know how or what exactly is done.)

While I can get it quite close the Skin Builder 8 does not get close enough to actually match up the Face to the neck. (See image three)

The idea I have is to use Skin Builder 8 to replicate the skin of Victoria 8.1 but I am not sure what settings will work to do that.
