Mining the DAZ Gallery for Hidden Gems
This is a thread that I've been kind of hoping to see for a long time. Finally decided to stop waiting for someone else and just start it myself. :)
Several days ago, the DAZ 3D gallery turned one year old! In the past year we've seen many incredible works of art, and I think you will agree that if you sort by overall popularity, the ones at the top are certainly some of the best renders around. On the other hand, sometimes really good images can "fall through the cracks," so to speak, and that's what this thread is about.
If you've found some amazing art in the Gallery that you feel hasn't gotten the attention it deserves (in terms of likes and comments), feel free to post links here. You can quickly find all of the gallery images you've given "thumbs-up" to by scrolling down and choosing view by: my likes.
By doing this, I'm hoping that we will give artists some much-deserved attention for their work, and also give everyone the opportunity to check out some really cool images that they might not have seen before.
Suggested criteria:
- The image has been "liked" by you
- It's received fewer than 5 total likes, or fewer than 10 likes+comments
- It was posted more than a month ago
- Please do not link to images that are known to be contest entries, unless the contest is over
Comments
To start things off, here are a few from way back in the very first days of the gallery:
Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe by StuartB (rendered in Bryce)
All New Action (Painted) by SnowSultan (DS render...with very nice postwork in Photoshop)
Lin in Room #3 by Reality Series #1 - Lin Around the House. Wait, this is a photograph, right? No, it's a composite image featuring a render incorporated into a photo.
Mary - Prairie Wedding by Carola O (DS render)
Merlin's Parish by Jabba (DS render)
Some more, also from November 2013. There were lots of images posted during the early days, and I'm not sure how many people watching...I probably missed a bunch of good ones myself.
Lucy and the Swampmonster by scorpio (DS)
Kisses Fountain by Llola Lane (DS)
Tribal Elder by Chohole (Bryce)
Moon of my Life by JulieK (DS)
Beauty by nemesis10
I'll have more to post at a later date, but I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else has found, too! :)
Oh good, I think this is a much needed thread! I haven't been to the gallery recently but this might push me to stop by more often.
My tastes seem to be different from many, I'm not into the female portraits that dominate the popular works (though I agree there are some outstanding works that rise to the top that anyone who likes art will admire). For that reason it's a real treat to be able to share some of the styles that I enjoy here.
That includes everything by Dani Foster Herring, an artist I very much admire. :) I'll just post this one by her for now.
The House on Sycamore Street by Dani Foster Herring
Some others I love:
ForestVille by Joelle is like something from a children's storybook. It looks like a DS render with a lot of overpainting... beautiful technique however it was done.
Falling Leaves by Nyneve. Just gorgeous.
Isle of Skye in Winter by Totte. I've been there. It has me convinced.
New Hairstyle by Edheldil. Familiar characters but full of personality... I like character renders that tell a story. (Note to self... do more of this!)
Carry You Home (Snape/Lily) by deslea. Fan art, and I'm not really a Harry Potter fan, but it has such a painterly, romantic look. Almost pre-Rapaelite. A lovely, tender moment too.
I just found an extra page in my likes, where a render I was looking for was hiding.
Oh, Her Look by malloryk. This is an all-time favourite. Again, characters that have been created and rendered with so much care. Happiness shines out from it.
Oh and this one...
Rescue in the Garden by Dani Foster Herring. Yes I'm sneaking another one by Dani in. I'm the only person who left a like? Seriously?
Art is always subjective, I guess these selections will surprise no one who knows me, but this sort of art doesn't get near as much attention as it should
I have picked images in each gallery that have had less number of "likes" but even the ones that have more never seem to feature in the top images for some reason.
TreeLay
Hillside
Disclosing A Parallel Nature
Far From The Big City 2
Relative Mass
Climbing the sea
Thanks, Jindi and chohole, for your contributions!
Here are some from December 2013:
Cover by LP4Ever - energetic render with dramatic lighting...I'd like to see more from this artist.
The moment of realising the strategy has failed... by Porsimo - Love the expressions; the lighting helps to increase the tension.
Cry Vengeance by DryJack - great emotion and body language in this one as well.
Breast cancer survivor by luannemarie - excellent use of light and shadow.
Gem cage ring 2 by dwsel - incredible realism in this Bryce render
Pond in old park by slepalex - chohole identified one of slepalex's other images in the post above; his/her whole gallery is worth a look, as is the case for many of these artists
Approaching Storm by wilfred - I particularly like the expressiveness of the horse!
Eidolon Siren: Portrait by Sorel - beautiful, magical portrait; I love the effort put into the surfaces/shaders
Excellent thread idea Scott. I shall post some of my favourites tomorrow
Thanks for starting this!
Totally not hidden, but I did really think this one was great http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/50549
Just a few of my favourites (edited with explanations!)
The Lair -http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/4593 - Excellent lighting. Love the way its all framed
The Battle of Lannick-Keep - http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/13735 - There's just so much to see here. All of it is fantastically posed to give an amazing overpowering battle!
Rain - http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/15220 - Excellent use of light that hides areas of the set but then uses a great strong light to lead you through the alley. The rain adds to the denseness. Its just fantastic.
Flight to the Blue Tower - http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/12411 - Stonemason just nails it with every image. This has a fantastic 'movie' feel to it. A real art triumph.
Daredevil Watching - http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/10536 - excellent atmosphere and really like how this has been composed!
I find these two techniques and works absolutely fascinating, especially the former. It looks like a classic, pulpy fantasy painting, not at all like a render (and I mean this is a compliment).
