Genesis 8 vs 8.1 Opinion

I loaded Gen 8 Basic Female and Gen 8.1 Basic Female, added the same hair to both, and clicked Render. I really don't see a difference. Am I missing something? See attached photo. Gen 8.1 is on the left, Gen 8 is on the right. Daz says "The Genesis 8.1 skin shader introduces improvements for Subsurface Scattering (less waxy skin), resulting in incredibly lifelike skin." I literally see no difference in the two.

Also, wondering why Victoria 8.1 is $44.95, while other new 8.1 characters are only like $18.95. Why is Victoria more than twice the price? And you have to spend another $39.95 to get the Victoria 8.1 HD Add On.

Anyway, what is your opinion of the 8.1 model.?

PS. Using Daz 4.15 and latest NVIDIA Studio Drivers that were released this month.

The Genesis 8.1 Bases don't use the new PBR Skin shader.

The price is the same for all of the Daz Name 8.1 characters, though the discounts may vary depending on which you look at and when.

  • Thank you, Richard.

Does this product use the PBR Skin Shader:

    https://www.daz3d.com/ry-perfectly-imperfect-skin-3-merchant-resource-for-genesis-81-female ;

RY Perfectly Imperfect Skin 3 says it "uses the Genesis 8.1 Female UV Maps". However, it does not say "PBR Material Presets".

Is PBR Material Presets the same thing as Genesis 8.1 Female UV Maps ?

And a final question: Can we assume that all Genesis 8.1 characters include the PBR Skin Shader ?

UV mapping tells software how to wrap an image around a model, it has nothing to do with the shader used. I'm not sure which shader the product uses, but the list of map types doesn't suggest the PBR Skin Shader.

  • So before we buy any 8.1 product on Daz3d.com, how do we know which one have the advertised "resulting in incredibly lifelike skin"?

    This page:

    https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-8-1

says "The Genesis 8.1 skin shader introduces improvements for Subsurface Scattering (less waxy skin), resulting in incredibly lifelike skin."

Are you saying if I want the extra life like skin from 8.1, that I should only buy those products that say PBR Skin Shader?

Thank you for your patience in helping me understand this.

The 8.1 skin shaders comes with Daz by default. You don't have to pay for it. It's the PA's perogative whether they want to use it or not, though there've been a lot of angry forum posts saying the PAs should disclose that in the product page.

This is also a helpful video for understanding how to use those shaders, etc.

I don't do close-up portraits so I'm not interested in the skin and improved eyes/lashes that much. But IMO the expressions of 8.1 are noticably better than that of 8.

    I agree...I just bought this today https://www.daz3d.com/z-colorful-emotions-mix-and-match-expressions-for-genesis-81-female
And I love it. The expressions with 8.1 are fantastic.

It seems to me that there are a lot of subtle improvements on the 8.1 figure.  Maybe it's just a placebo effect, but I think most of the joint bends and twists are more realistic.  It's not something I even really notice until I switch back to a 8.0 figure.

For me, the Expressions improvements are more than worth updating to 8.1. I try to make my characters as lifelike as I can (with my limited skills). With 8.0, I really struggled with the expressions. Using any one-click expressions was pretty much useless, since it made the face look terrible. I had one character that I had spent a lot of time on, trying to make her jsut the way I wanted her. As soon as I used her in a game, and tried applying expressions, she looked terrible.

With 8.1, a lot of the 8.0 expressions look pretty good.

I didn't know I needed to deal separately with the Skin. I'll look into that.
