can you use a seperate PC to render?

SO i've got a small PC i picked up off the pile of old stuff at work that has a faster processor than my current PC, but has an on-board video card that doesn't support openGL.

What i'm thinking of doing is creating the stuff on the PC with the good vid card and saving the file to the 2nd PC.

Am i nuts to think that is a good idea? Using team viewer to view the renders

If it is possible do i need to install the program with the same directory structure as what's on the main PC?

Is the basis of a server farm?

Thanks in advance.

I assume you're using DAZ Studio. You can download the standalone free version of 3delight, and use the Render to RIB option on your main machine. It's limited to 4 cores, however. Using DS on the machine without OpenGL wouldn't work, as DS won't even start. I believe the RIB file is self-contained, so you wouldn't need all your content replicated, but I'm not certain about that.

DAZ Studio doesn't support network rendering -- that's part of the deal for getting the 3delight renderer without the 4-core limitation inside DS.

If you had two machines with sufficient OpenGL, as long as they're for your own use, you could install DS and your content on both, and set up scenes on one while rendering on the other.

Sorry, you are correct that is within DAZ Studio i keep forgetting we've got other app on the forums.

Okay so then a free download from 3delight and then start using the advance option for render to RIB. That shouldn't be too hard, the smaller machine and a quad core with a faster speed then my poor core duo :( (i know i need a new PC and tax time might behold me a new one) I don't think it has openGL with the onboard vid card, but i'm not 100% since i haven't installed windows on it yet, it still has Ubuntu on it.

Now once i get the new PC and do the .duf transfers between PCs does the file structure need to be the same to do the render and setup? That's kind of what i was hoping to do with the new PC, so i'll cros my fingers on the openGL :)

    Thanks Mike.

For the .duf scene to find the Data and texture files they just need to be in mapped content folders; only the relative path matters. However, the CMS uses absolute paths, so if you aren't planning to have your content folders in the same place, you should Export User Data on the old machine before copying over the content folders, then Re-Import Metadata on the new machine.

another silly question, if i'm going to use 3delight and RIM how much of a difference does HDD space over CPU speed make? I've got another PC with more HDD space but is slower processor wise.
