Subdivision question

I know subdivision increases the poly count but what is Render sub vs the regular one?

It makes me assume that the render one ups the count for renders? If so then why would i ever want the regular sub anything above 1?

I could be way off so i figured id ask the experts!

Yes, Render SubD is sued for Iray etc. (3Delight makes its own determination of how many divisions are needed). The other is used for the Viewport, you might well want a higher level at times to preview HD morphs or the like.

Is it possible that things like auto-follow and smoothing modifier use SubD (and not Render SubD)?

I think I once worked with SubD at minimum and Render SubD at 5. Things looked good in the viewport but the render was full of clipping issues. But this was a long time ago, I might be misremembering.

Yep, that happens. Sometimes it helps to also increase the render subd level of the clothing items, or - if they are not subd - convert them via Edit -> Object -> Geometry -> Convert to SubD.

    Displacement can sometimes cause this.
