Base figure vs other figures confusion

I'm a newbie and decided to play with a morph pack I've just bought only to find out that it only works with a g8 base figure and doesn't show up for any other g8 figure. Which imo is totally not obvious and should be clearly stated on the store page. On the other hand it seems I can apply a full body morph & mats of the desired figure to the base figure and it looks identical, with all the morphs I need showing up. So the question is, is there any downside to this, are the results really identical? Or is there any other way to use the morphs on those figures? Also the store says 8.1 is incompatible with g8 figures, yet the morphs & mats seem to apply fine.

There is no confusion - There are just 2 G8 figures with complete geometry and they are Genesis 8 Female and Genesis 8 Male, any and all other figures and morphs are just modifying these two either by moving the vertices somewhere or modifying/changing the skin to another color or changing the amount and depth of details on them.

Genesis 8.1 Female and Genesis 8.1 Male are an evolution of G8 versions, and in general the Characters and morphs made for G8, will function also on G8.1 with the exception of some expressions (can be made to work), scripts and shells.

This shouldn't be the case. Which figure, which morph pack? More specifics please.
