Using Poser Runtime with DS

I started out with Poser years ago, and 95% of the content I use in DS is still accessed from the Poser runtime.

I haven't used Poser for years, and probably never will again - yet the application still resides on my machine. Is it absolutely necessary to have the actual Poser application installed in order to use Poser content from a Poser runtime folder with DS? What would happen if I uninstalled the Poser application but left the runtime folder in place intact?

One of the frustrations I've had with DS is the "file not found" (usually a texture associated with a Poser prop or figure), which I then have to locate manually (and left wondering why DS doesn't remember this information). I'm afraid if I change anything, that problem is going to go on steroids. In the meantime, the Poser application is still taking up valuable HD space.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It is not necessary to have Poser installed in order to use Poser content in DS. As for the "file not found" problem, that's usually caused by the content itself using absolute paths instead of relative paths - absolute being something like this: C:/xxxx/xxxx/Runtime/xxxx, and relative being Runtime/xxxx.

So let's say I uninstall the Poser application while leaving the (rather bloated) Poser runtime intact...should I leave it where it is or attempt to move it into the "Documents" folder where DS and its associated files reside? Given this "absolute path" issue, I'm thinking I should leave it where it is - but I'm a bit worried about using the "uninstall" command to get rid of the Poser application.

Understand, I've been collecting content for over fifteen years, now...that runtime is about 35 GB or so by now...:ohh:

Content files are suppose to use relative addressing so they can be install anywhere you like, just need to point Studio or Poser to it.

Either absolute or just plain wrong; one of the more common types of this problem in older content, especially freebies (becoming less common nowadays but not entirely disappeared) is to have all the actual files install into the right places, but the texture paths point to a "work-in-progress" folder outside the content location, that exists only on the content creator's computer. Poser can search quickly for these dud paths and usually find them eventually, but D|S could never do this properly and the function was eventually removed. Easily fixed if you realise what's happening, but it's a nuisance.

Exactly, SpottedKitty! Poser Pro 2014 doesn't remove content during uninstall, but I can't remember if older versions do or not. You should be able to move the entire content runtime without too much trouble - as noted, there may be some items that may still cause file not found errors, but it's a quick fix to edit the files and correct the path info.
