Hey all, trying my hand at doing makeup for characters in photoshop. Used a contouring tutorial on google and I really like the results, check it out :D

Nice!
What was the workflow?
You painted on an existing face texture in Photoshop I guess? Was it hard? : )
Thanks! I loaded a plain texture in Photoshop and made light and dark triangles on the characters skin and then Gaussian blurring them to almost the max, then I add a little color to the cheeks.
For the lips I duplicate the plain face layer and adjust the color and curves of the texture so the lips are the color I want, then I make a mask and paint the lips over the other lips. Forgot to mention before all this I lay a foundation down using a Gaussian blurred face texture duplicate that has a mask applied to it and is applied sparingly just to smooth the skin. You can add some texture by either setting the makeup to a different blending mode which sometimes doesn't work, or you can add noise to the makeup layer, or there are also skin texture Photoshop brushes laying around on the web that can he used to create some very convincing skin textures. I'm thinking of making a tutorial with pics.
I often wonder how artists who create characters create the skin textures.
I mean they must have a photo reference for that, right?
And I guess most people don´t have a professional photo studio at home where they could hire models to take well lit, professional pictures of their skin that would be used for textures.
Or do they only use brushes?
I´d love to texture my own character one day but I can imagine it´s one of the hardest things to do : )
It's not that hard, if you know what you are doing you can create very realistic skin textures from scratch.
Guassian blur and noise are your best buddies when creating skin textures. it also helps to have wrinkle brushes and skin texture brushes, all which can be found for free on the internet.
I see : ) I will have to look into that one day. So far I have only tried modeling clothes, some simple objects and a whole room once.
I am setting up SSS shader in Maya but I´m still using V6 textures.
If you decide to make a tutorial, I will be looking forward to that!
