Creating characters that look like real people

Hi all,

I'm not looking for a one-click solution here, because I know they can produce some horrible results. I'm after a bit of general advice please.

Are there any tools out there, or even within Daz Studio, that allow you to load a photograph of someone, say face on. Then overlay, say the genisis 8 model, then "pull" the geometry to match that of the photo. IE. Giving a good starting point to captures someones likeness.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

No. Daz Studio is not a mesh modelling program. You'd need to export the figure to an external program like Blender (free) or zBrush (not free) to sculpt it, then re-import it as a morph.

Anybody who tries to tell you you can use Mesh Grabber for this has clearly never tried to use Mesh Grabber for this.

Not sure why you think one click solutions aren't any good, but there are 3 options using Daz Studio and the Genesis figures. One is facegen artist pro, the other is headshop and then you have the builtin face transfer option in DS. All results depend of quality input images though, the better the source files, the better the morph

if you have a 3D scanner or an iPhone with a depth camera you can scan always your actual heads.

Then use Zprojection in Zbrush or Shrinkwrap in Blender along with other tools like reptoflow to get the shape on DAZ figures,

I cannot scan my head successfully but have used other meshes in Zbrush with Zprojection to get pretty close shape matches.

  • Thanks for the advice guys.

And I didn't think 1 click options were any good. I stand corrected.

If you decide to go with Face Transfer, I'd also recommend checking out this product as a companion piece. I've found that it helps with improving on the quality of the morphs that are generated by the basic Face Transfer utility.

As far as the body goes, you just need to have a good collection of morphs and the right characters. Keep in mind that the characters sold here come from many different artists, and not all of them strive for realism. The base G8 doesn't even strive to be "realistic". You'lll need to take the time to really look at the different PA's profiles and characters they offer to find the ones that work best for you, there are some threads on this topic already.  Also learning the material texture shader system is extremly important to achieving realism no matter what the body shape. Getting morphs to tweak average body lenghts, hips, adjust muscles, vascular, asymetry and more are all neccessary assets to getting a figure shaped how you want. You can scult the character some in Blender/ZB but you can't do fine details as you can't do HD with those, but the morphs will usually give you HD. Lastly, getting a good collection of poses that are "natural" are needed too, but keep in mind just clicking on a pose probably won't get you 100% to where you want to be, you'll still need to go in and do more adjustments after that to make them look right.

Headshop is still available but there is a new version so the link in that post doesn't work anymore. Current version is this one: https://www.daz3d.com/headshop-2024-win

Regarding face transfer, the link provided is for the version which works with Genesis 8 figures. If you want to use it with Genesis 9 you need Face Transfer 2: https://www.daz3d.com/face-transfer-2

Not sure about Facegen artist pro.
