Thank you KA1, I had tried a few materials but had not gotten to that one yet. I'm away from the "good computer" right now so I'll test it out tomorrow. But it looks like it works from your render laugh

I love the idea of this but can't seem to make heads or tails of it...I've read the pdf's and they're not a great deal of help as I'm dyslexic and I just can't get my head around it.

Is there a visual tutorial around anywhere...like

    1. load a particular prop

    2. do this - 3. do that 4 whatever.... and let your imagination run wild.

Hey Strixowl- I see your post was on Sept 23 and I didn't get a notice that you posted here, sorry I missed it. I have not used Reality but I found this post: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/53174/mirrors-a-la-reality-4

Hello again Marshian. I tried this same pic in the new Reality and got nothing but black past the tree. Tried a number of different materials with no success.

    Hi Shanina,

    These directions may help:

    Quick Start:
Load one of the room-sized props into a scene you have already created (with camera inside the prop).
    Or
Load a figure-sized prop and use the camera it's parented to.

....make sure you use one of the render settings and your main elements are inside the prop and hit render.

I was really surprised at how easy this was to plug in and experiment with. I believe you'll get the hang of it quickly. If you are looking for more ideas on starting check earlier posts in this thread. Let me know if you have more questions. As my notices when someone posts are hit and miss if you dont hear back from me in a couple days please send a PM.

Great stuff! Now all we need is for DAZ to release a G2M De Caprio lookylikey!

Great example, I can see the setup...love this product.

  • just bought it....i was searching tips about iray...now i have a lot of tips to try....looks so much fun! :D

    thanks!

Thank you mininessie! You'll get some similar effects by using one of the default Iray metal surfaces.

  • I'm really curious about seeing this used with iray as well as animation. I'm wondering if thats even possible. As its the weekend, I'm pretty sure this will stay in Fast Grab all weekend as most fast grabs never change on the weekend, so if anyone has it and can do some Iray renders, I would love to see what can be accomplished. From the outside looking in, it seems very interesting, but I don't know if I could actually use in iray for either stills or animation.

Stills are very possible. As far as animation I would think about how a real mirror would behave when viewed from a moving camera. I'll post a render or link tomorrow. There are a few In the forum I just need to hunt around a bit.
  • Snagged this as soon as I saw it along with the archetectural light rig and the rim light rig.  Looking forward to trying this out!

Here is a render in Iray, its much more function than form (not too exciting but shows that it will work).

  • Wow-that's pretty cool

Cool, thanks for posting those links. Definitely going in the shopping cart now, I'll definitely get some use out of it. I could see a cool funhouse type animation being done with this, like walking through a maze of mirrors. Hopefully I can figure out how to make that happen.

I ran some quick tests in iray. I had to apply a mirror shader to the surfaces of the kaleidoscope props to get it to work in iray.

Here's the same exact camera angle in Chinatown, as you can see its a pretty cool way to extend a cityscape into infinity, and fill in empty backgrounds very quickly and easily, as in the example here. Definitely worth a few bucks for that feature alone, even if I don't use it for anything else. Which I'm sure once I play around with it I'll find other cool things to do with it.

Thanks so much for posting your results. Kaleidoscope was released before Iray so its really nice to see it can shine to full potential with a little adjustment.

Below is a render that didn't make it into the promos. The prop was placed right in the middle of the intersection.

Would the mirror shader from this product work? http://www.daz3d.com/homestyle-2-iray-shaders

Or did you make special adjustments to it?

  • MarshianMarshian Posts: 1,462
I don't have that product but it should work. You can use one of the IRAy default metal shaders too. If you get inspired to do a post of one of your renders I'd like to see it.

I saw a preview for a movie that had the buildings folding into kaleidoscopic type stuff.  Can that be done with kaleidoscope?

Edit it was not inception but similar building bending idea

  • The thing that won't work in Iray is having some objects not reflect in the mirror.

  • MarshianMarshian Posts: 1,462

Thats right. Ubersurface in 3DL allowed for that. So in Iray the object will have to be hidden from reflecting, such as with the red ball in this linked image. Or it will need to be added in an image editing program.

Yes, just rendering the image in 2 takes would be the easiest, hiding the object, and then hiding the background, and then combining the layers.

The mirror shader I used was a freebie, but the chrome shader included with DS should work as well, haven't tried the chrome shader as I already had the mirror shader.

I did a quick search to see if there was a thread for the new Kaleidoscope for Irayand found this thread (again, since I remember reading it before) hoping to find out if the new version had a no-reflect method similar to the original, or if the promos were done in the 2-render fashion recommended here. In general, I'd like to know if the new version is worth buying if you already own the original. Is there anything really unique to the shader set it comes with that an experienced user would not be able to replicate with a reasonable amount of effort?

Yes, it will be interesting to see the differences between the https://www.daz3d.com/kaleidoscope

and the new version for iray.

Got it!!  I can't wait to fill my screen with Stonemason's Urban Future sets.  Everytime I try to render them, my system chokes on 2 or 3 of them and I really want a MASSIVE city.

Oops!  Is this thread just about the old one?  I got the Iray one.

I'd be very interested to learn if this allows for figures to not be reflected, so that characters can be placed in stretching corridors. I know the 3Delight version can do that, but wasn't aware 'non-reflection' was viable for Iray-compatible rendering.

SO MUCH FUN!!!! Very cool product as always.

  • I'm having a brain fog moment, but how can I make it so that a figure (or any other individual item) doesn't reflect? I just bought the new Iray version and hnnnnnngh this is just what I needed for a lot of things, but I for the life of me can't figure out how to make something not be reflected. :T
