Shading edge of domain

Is there a way to shade the edge of a shading domain (that is, pixels near a seam) differently than the interior? For example, an input to a mixer to select one group for the edge and the other for the rest.

This is an option in the toon shader, but there you are restricted to the toon shader and to using strokes rather than arbitrary shading.

I've been digging through the shader room and numerous extensions, but haven't gotten anything to work yet so I'm looking for ideas.
