In the morning, Ameiko went to the scholars great library to search for information on undeads, while Ater went to study with his master. Merisiel went somewhere on her own business, and Ulfnaar went to help Garnek in the blacksmith to fix the old sword with a broken hilt. While repairing it, just when Ulfnaar had worked up the fire and his sweat, Garnek found a small tube made of Mithril in the broken handle of the sword, it contained a message in a foreign language.
When Ameiko was talking to the librarian, Garnek stomped into the library shouting I found some kind of message, you might be able to read it.
Garnek was right, Ameiko could indeed read the foreign language, and she was chocked when she read it. It was a letter from her Grandfather, to her father, a letter he obviously never got, talking about dark enemies and dangers. It mentioned a place called Brunewall, that they could not find on any maps. The scholars told her that the place is now desolated, cursed and it is located to the north, in the troll hills. The place was desolated from one day to another, no one knows what happened. Brunewall might hold vital information about Ameiko’s past. Ameiko decides that this is where the expedition must go.
Meanwhile, Ater has together with one of the elder Wizards learnt how you can turn items of superior craftsmanship into magical items, items like weapons or armour. When he finally understood the complex magic required he made a jump of happiness. He told Merisiel and they decided that they needed to go the Phandalin as soon as possible, as there is the magic mines the group owns a share of, and the magic used to turn items of superior craftsmanship into magical items has to be performed in the magic mines.
It turned into a rather heated discussion over where the group should go next. Ameiko so badly wanted to go to Brunewall to take up the trail of her lost history while Ater and Garnek wanted to go Phandalin and the Phandelver mines to try to add magic to Garnek’s axes. Merisiel also wanted to go to Phandalin, she had some private business to attend to there. Ulfnaar didn’t really participate in the discussion, he found a dead dragonfly that he found interesting. Ameiko said: I will go to Brunewall whether you go or not. Ater said: We need to go to the mines, at least to protect our investments there. Garnek said something about his axes. Ulfnaar said: Is this a bird or a bug? I’m not sure which. After some discussions they all decided to first go south to Phandalin, then go north into the troll hills for Ameiko’s expedition.
A quick recap picture done by the guy who plays Ater Evenwood. I like it so I post it here as it makes more sense than Ulfnaar's feeble attempts to keep track of where he were. Ulfnaar is a great guy, but not the sharpest candle in the drawer.
I particularly like the lighting in this one, and dwarf up on the stool is a nice touch.

Thanks!
Although, he who plays Garnek (the dwarf) said Garnek would never embarrass himself by standing on a stool ;-)

Heroes never stand down. There is no embarassment to rise up.
(i'll delete this image tommorow, just thought this picture of wolverine might be an interesting point to the discussion)

Can I nick that to show Garnek's Player?
During the ride to Phandalin, Ulfnaar realized that they were going to where Mirian was killed. After talking to Ater, Ulfnaar learnt that Mirian was killed in the magic mines of Phandelver while the group was cleansing the mines from the evils that has overtook the mines. The mines where now free of evil and the group has gotten a 10% of the mines as reward.
When they were close to the mining town of Phandalin on the road that went around every hill, they say fire and smoke rising to the sky from where Phandalin lay. Suddenly they heard a sound in the air….
The party quickly went around the next hill, and they saw that several buildings in Phandalin was on fire, but the keep seems to be safe, so far. They saw a group of Kobolds trying to break into a house and they attacked. Ameiko parkoured off her horse and attacked with her deadly kicks. Merisiel threw two daggers and both hit their targets and they went down. Ater cast some magic spell while Ulfnaar rushed towards the Drake, throwing an axe, which missed and he was chewed on by the Drake in return. Garnek came rushing and joined Ulfnaar fighting the Drake.
Suddenly a group of people comes running between some houses, and behind them comes a group of Kobolds. It’s Tomlin Stonehill, the tavern keeper and his wife and son. Mrs Stonehill has a spear and a shield and turns to face to incoming Kobolds while Tomlin tried to take his son into safety. Merisiel throws two daggers and two kobolds goes down. Garnet the dwarf rushes to meet the Kobolds and shoots a magic flame against the Kobolds, but missed. Ater uses his magic and the Kobolds falls asleep. Garnek is convinced that he scared them to death with his fearful appearance. Ulfnaar and Ameiko is finishing of the last of the first group of Kobolds and the Drake.
The group decides to escort the Keep. On the way they meet yet another group of Kobolds and a Dragon cultist and a guard. Ameiko parcours along the wall over some stuff to get behind them, and Ulfnaar rushes against them to face them in battle. Ater casts a charm spell and charms the cultist. The cultist orders the Kobolds to stand down, which startles Ulfnaar who just freezes in his charge. What happened he thought? Ameiko and Merisiel attacks, so does Garnek. Ulfnaar who is very confused shouts “You have to make up you mind Ater, are they friend or foe?”. Ater orders Ulfnaar to capture the cultist so he can be interrogated, and Ulfnaar rushes in and grapples him and carries toe screaming cultist back to Ater and says “Here, tied him up, he is one wiggly worm”. The group then encounter a group plundering the tavern. They are quickly stopped, and Ulfnaar cleaves a Kobold in half with his Wakizashi, good steel indeed in this foreign blade he thought.
Finally the group arrives at the keep, in the nick of time, before the gates were closed. Ater interrogates the cultist that Ulfnaar carried with him, and learns that there is a camp somewhere near. In the camp, there are some dragon eggs.
Meanwhile, Garnek learns that there are people missing, probably locked themselves in the safest place, the bank. Merisiel really want to go to the bank to save the people and protect her investments. The group exists the keep through a secret tunnel and successfully arrives at the bank after Ater used magic and put half a dozen Kobolds to sleep. Ulfnaar thought that with the Cultists helmet, he could fool the Kobolds he was a cultist and tell them they were needed elsewhere, but the plan obviously failed.
The bank building was surrounded by several groups of Kobolds led by Dragon cultists. On the front side, a group of Kobolds were trying to break down the front port with a battering ram. The sound of wood breaking could be heard. Several more groups were approaching the bank, this was now or never. They decided to take a look at the backdoor instead.
On the back side, a group of Kobolds were trying to set fire to the back door. After Ulfnaar’s failed impersonation attempt they charged the Kobolds and Ulfnaar was surrounded by Kobolds and took some hits from their spears, nothing lethal though, just a scratch, or two. They successfully took out the Kobolds and knocked on the small door the people inside that they needed to hurry if they wanted to live. Out came half a dozen people, and the largest manlike thing Ulfnaar ever seen, the Bank-Ogre, carrying the chest with all the money.
When everyone was safely out of the bank, Ameiko led the way as the group of refugees did not know about the secret passage to the Keep. Ulfnaar and Garnek took the tail, and a huge group of Kobolds, cultists and Drakes came rushing after them. The group followed an old stone border and the enemies were on the other side, but the border ended, and the Kobolds was slowly closing in. Ulfnaar and Garnek took a defensive position and Ulfnaar decided it was time to use his father’s old shield. Ater cast some magic spell to slow down the Kobolds, giving the refugees a little time to get further along the path. Ameiko just told the to continue in the direction and then she and Merisiel prepared to fight. The dragon was still circling the skies, and Ulfnaar thought “I don’t have to outrun the dragon, I just have to outrun the dwarf”.
When Aters spells did not hold them back anymore, the horde of Kobolds, Drakes and Cultists came rushing. Ulfnaar and Garnek fought for their and their friends lives. Ulfnaar was surrounded by several Kobolds and Drakes and was severely beaten and stabbed, but killed a bunch of the attackers. Merisiel and Ameiko fought defending the flank and got help by the Bank Ogre who stomped several Kobolds to mash. Ulfnaar shouted to Garnek “I need healing!” and Garnek made a magic gesture and Ulfnaar suddenly felt much better.
Suddenly the first wave was down, and the two remaining Cultists retreated to join the next group of Kobolds. They did not spill any time, Ameiko took point and the odd column of refugees and adventurers continued towards the forest.
The group ran as fast as their legs could carry them, and Ater used one of his many magic wands to place magic spider web to make it harder for the Kobolds to keep up. When they came to the small tunnel opening, and Ulfnaar saw the giant Ogre, he though “Ohh, this will not go well. Reminds me when my grandma got stuck in the privy-door back when he was a kid”. But the bank woman made a magic gesture and the choker around the Ogres neck flashed blue, and he shrunk down to the size of a human. Not the next problem, the chest. Ulfnaar and Garnek both had to help the Ogre to carry the chest through the tunnel, but them all came through and into the keep, where they quickly formed a defensive position around the tunnel opening. If anyone decided to enter, they would not come far. The sky darkened again when the dragon passed over the keep, and the thunder was deafening and the lightning bolts set fire to a house. They were safer here, but this was far from over yet.
Well safely inside, and the tunnel secured, Garnek and Ulfnaar, decided to chest-bump to celebrate a great day, but Ulfnaar being an athletic guy jumped high up in the air, Garnek barely lifted from the ground, and instead of bumping into Ulfnaar’s chest, he forcefully bumped into Ulfnaar’s groin. But there was no time for Ulfnaar to feel sorry for himself, someone yelled Dragon!!!
The Castellion had learnt from the prisoner that the Dragon’s name was Lennithon and he kept coming back, sweeping over the castle and firing off occasional bolts of lightning. The militia soon learned to duck and the attacks slowly ended when evening turned into night. Everyone was still keeping their heads down as the Dragon could return any minute. Garnek and Ulfnaar had been summoned by the Castellion, Eskobert the Red, to the inner Keep to do some repairs on important structures. Ulfnaar carried some heavy blocks of stone and Garnek used a combination of magic and skills to repair the keep after the Dragon’s attacks.
Then, suddenly, the Dragon came back and made a precise strike against one of the men on the wall, who was taken by surprise, and fell dead from the wall. Seconds later, the small side door was breached and a group of Kobolds and Mercenaries stormed in. Ater, who was in the tower, said “No one remembers a coward!” and used his staff of the spiders to cast a web spell on the Dragon, who was suddenly engulfed in sticky spider web, lost his balance in the air for a few seconds and crashed into the forest.
Ameiko spots a group of Kobolds and mercenaries and parcours to attack them and crushes the head of one of the intruders with a roundhouse kick. Merisiel rushes to attack them as well and yells to one of the militias to call for Ulfnaar and Garnek. They hear the call and starts to run, we all know how fast dwarves run, but Garnek was first into the stairs from the basement as he was closest. When Ulfnaar and Garnek finally reached the gate to the inner keep, all they saw was some dead intruders. Ater used a spell of fire in the small room where the Kobolds was hiding. Meanwhile, the dragon finally got up from ground, and he didn’t look happy at all. Ater turned invisible, and Garnek and Ulfnaar rushed to repair the door they had broken down, and to secure the area.
The Dragon came from above, this time directly at the tower. Ater dives down the staircase when the Dragon tries to fry anyone on the tower with his electric breath. Ameiko decides to try to parkour onto the Dragon next time it comes by, and quickly parkours up the stairs. She prepare herself and activates her ring of jumping. For a athletic monk like her, this is as simple as making a 3 yard for a normally trained person. When the Dragon comes, she jumps into the air, but slips on some bird droppings and gracefully misses the surprised dragon, that was so surprised it forgot to fry the tower. Ameiko lands safely though on her feet, and rushed up the tower to try again. This time, the Dragon is quicker and fries Ameiko to a crispy burnt steak, but she survives, as Garnek gets her heart beating again. A close encounter with death this night, will there be more?
Suddenly a large group carrying torches arrives to the Keep. The group consists of many Kobolds, cultists, mercenaries and is led by a huge blue half dragon, known as Langderosa. With them the have a hostage of about a dozen of villages. Langderosa speaks in his dark voice: “I challenge your best and bravest warrior in a duel. If you accept this challenge, these ten villages will be handed over to you. if you refuse, they will die”,
Ulfnaar did not hesitate at all. He opened the gate, pulled up the portcullis and walked out into the ring of torch holding enemies, he replied: “I accept your challenge!”. There he stood, the evil Langderosa, over eight feet tall, with his huge sword that was almost five feet long. Was Ulfnaar afraid? No way, he was confident, ready, he was doing the right thing to save these innocent people.
Ulfnaar moved towards Langderosa, but he was taken by complete surprise when Langderosa breathed lightning right in Ulfnaar’s face. Ulfnaar was caught off guard and failed to duck and he was blinded and then Langderosa hit him hard with his huge two handed sword. Ulfnaar was thrown backwards by the blow and was knocked out. Langderosa stepped forward, raised his gigantic sword and thrusted it into Ulfnaar’s body. Then he shouted: -”Release the prisoners, we’re out of here!”. The prisoners were released, and the siege of Fandalin was finally over. Garnek rushed out to Ulfnaar’s lifeless body.
Worried for Ulfnaar, want to see how this turns out. Lovely render though, well done.
When Garnek reached Ulfnaar’s lifeless body, Ulfnaar was barely breathing. Garnek’s healing magic and Ulfnaar’s will to die another day made him come back to his senses. The wound was not fatal, it hadn’t hit anything that Garnek’s healing powers could not restore, but healing would take time. Ulfnaar was carried into the keep and placed in a bed beside Ameiko, and the Castellion ordered that there would be around the clock watch over them so they would heal and be safe. Bandages was to be changed two times every day. Ulfnaar was in pain, but most of all he was mad, mad for being made a fool by the oldest trick in the book, spit your opponent in the face then strike. The recovery would take at least a week, and while Ulfnar and Ameiko slowly healed with the help of Garnek’s healing skills and magic, the others helped out to restore as much Phandalin as possible. Half of the houses was destroyed, and many families were homeless.
Go Ulfnaar, go Ulfnaar!
Nice render again.
Thanks BlumBlumShub for your comments!
Ulfnaar's adventures will continue this Sunday, hopefully he will live to tell the tale!
In the morning, a maid calls all the adventures to the Great Hall of the keep. The keep was a grand mansion before it was rebuilt as a keep, and still has the great hall. In the great hall, priestess Garaele from the Phandalin temple was seeing to the wounds of a monk. The monk, named Valadra, had disturbing tidings. He told the group that he was a disciple of master Leosin, and he and a group of monks had been tracking this band of dragon cultists and Kobolds for several months, and Leosin had plans to infiltrate them. After last nights events, Leosin was gone, vanished. All he had found was his staff and his leather choker with a silver dragon on it. Ater was shocked, as Leosin was Ater's mentor.
