Wondering why there is no proper bridge for Poser-DAZ Studio

All these connectivity bridges in the DAZ  Store but no bridge for Poser to DAZ Studio and back.  I think in the long run, it may be a selling point for newer stuff that one may want to use in Poser to be properly bridged over to Poser to render or what have you rather than the old way of exporting the scene via FBX (I THINK that Poser 12 has some of those bugs taken care of but in Poser 11 FBX is buggy and doesn't work as intended allot of the time for all my tests).  While Poser 12 may have those bugs wrangled there are allot of folks that refuse to upgrade to Poser 12 because of the ongoing beta status of the software so they stick with earlier versions of Poser.  A bridge built to handle at least Poser 11 and 12 would be nice to help get desired items over there.

  • But the bridges use FBX.

Ah well that probably plays into the issue, esp with Poser 11 being so buggy in that way and Poser 12 seemingly better.

I wish that DAZ would make the DSON Importer open-source.  I'm sure there are some libraries that would need to remain proprietary, but if the Python source were open it could be updated to Python 3, which is what the current version of Poser uses...

their choices are strange to say the least, as a Carrara user I am baffled by the recent halfassed integration of new features in their flagship program, Poser as well as Carrara and Bryce had 10 years ago.

Of course Blender is in ongoing development and also has those features and more hence the number of people embracing it, however integration is nowhere as easy as it would be in Poser that did at one point load duf format pretty seamlessly with HDmorph support too no less!

Dson and a few other things need updating but like Carrara, Genesis 2 and below should at least be able to be made to work like they previously did, while no new releases of those generations will ever sadly grace the DAZ store they are still great figures and could sell to Poser users with various backwards conversions of clothing (Like I do for Carrara)

Actually its not hard to use the Fitting room as is on DAZ obj exports of later clothing ( I use the V4 clone shapes on later figures in DAZ and export obj and fit them to her for example) so there is that.

Those clothes then work for me in Carrara too.

I am only using Poser11 though not updating because of the DSON issue

Agreed.  Seems that DAZ still see's Poser as some sort of theat or something?  Makes no sense.  More folks are picking up Blender as their default more than Poser!  LOL

As far as I can remember, it was the owners of Poser that didn't want to continue cooperation.

I believe that was SmithMicro though, the new owners I don't think have that sort of attitude.  I may be wrong but to my knowledge I think anything to bolster useage and what not is welcome.

Smith Micro at least worked with Daz on development to a point but when the new owners took over they didn't want anything to do with Daz and wanted to push their own figures.

Still having quite a few problems but managing and seeing a few specialist. Hopefully they can sort something out or at least let me know if the memory problem is permanent or not.

Is the DSON importer only written in Python? I think that the SDK for writing machine code plugins for Poser is only available to registered developers. If it is only Python then it should be possible to re-create it.

The split happened long before then; I recall it was around 2015-ish when then Product Manager Charles Taylor made an announcement that Poser would not be persuing Genesis 3 support.  Since the SM blog and the RDNA forums are long gone, I can't locate the announcement.

I think the orignal tension came in 2011 when Poser 9 was released without support for animated joint centers (it was added in an SR a few months later, which allowed the DSON Importer to be released).   This was about the time Studio 4 and Genesis were released,  and both needed to get their products out to make some money (Studio Pro was initially a paid product), so for the first time the primary DAZ figure couldn't be used in Poser.

The Genesis 2 figures were my go-tos in Poser, and since the DSON importer will not run on Poser 12, I did not upgrade, and have been transitioning to Studio.  However, I do miss the Poser Material room and the morph brush, and I find lighting easier to set up in Poser...

Wow. Daz version 4 is a decade old? That's ancient in software terms. I wonder if we hit DAZ Studio 4.40 in another decade :D

Bear in mind that, since Daz doesn't charge for the application, it has no burning need to churn out new major version numbers. The changes and feature additions across the life of DS 4.x have been pretty extensive (Iray, dForce cloth, dForce hair to pick just three big ones which would probably have incremented the major version number on an application that charged).

I made the switch to Studio I think almost two years ago and the one of the things I really miss about Poser is the morph brush. Mesh Grabber can do some of the basic things the morph brush could do but the morph brush is simply on another level of functionality and I miss the versatility it gave me.

Well, as someone that has used Poser since like...1999, it was hard for me to break away from Poser.

Eventually, Smith-Micro and what I consider to be really negative attitudes at Renderosity was enough for me.

Personally, I feel that Renderosity forum users and Smith-Micro were extremely negative towards Daz3D.

They were painting the separation as Daz Studio causing the problem when it was simply that Smith-Micro didn't want to nor made efforts to support Genesis.

Daz3D actually sent Smith-Micro the direction they were going in and from what I gather, Smith-Micro didn't want Daz3D dictating their direction.

Daz Studio tried to help Poser users. Even developing an IMPORTER to work around Smith-Micro. That was the bridge.

Poser started "dying" because even though Smith-Micro didn't want to use Genesis or promote it, they had to answer to it.

And when they finally did, it was too late and Daz3D took over much of the "Posing, Doll House" market.

I don't know whats happening with Poser now, because when I used it, I used V4, which was Poser's most popular model.

I knew their logic was off when they wanted to break away from that with NO PLAN.

I personally wouldn't bother with Poser unless Daz and Renderosity work another cross-platform deal out.

The plus side about using Daz Studio is that you can use most nearly everything Poser has to offer.

I do think that somethings in Poser are superior to Daz Studio but...that's not enough.

  •     Yeah, except that I really don't like using Daz Studio, and I have tried.   My favorite rendering software is Carrara, my second is Poser.     At this point, I'm pretty sure the feud between Poser and Daz is mutual, which is sad because it just hurts the artist community.    At this point, I don't see the reconciling, though.  I just wish that Daz would send some love Carrara and Bryce's way.

What feud? Daz provided the DSON Importer for Genesis and Genesis 2, but later versions will not import due to their using a feature (Dual Quaternion Skin Binding) that Poser lacked. I would imagine that the fact that the importer was limited to the older figures may waell have meant itwasn't worth recoding for the new version of Python In Poser 12. I can't see wht Renderosity would have deliberately excluded Daz content either, considering they sell add-ons. I am unconvinced that the issues have anything at all to do with feuding.

I'm not going to rehash all the details, that would just start a flame war and I really don't want to do that.    It also goes all the way back to smith micro days.  The sad truth is that as of today the current daz figures don't work with the current poser, and the older figures are starting to not work with the older DSON capable Poser.    For me, as an artist, this is just bad all around and I really don't care who's at fault.   All I know is that it took me 3 days giving up sleep and the help of another user (who used Daz Studio to change some UV files in Daz Genesis Mouse) before I could even begin making art.   Those UV files were making it not work in both Poser 11.5 (with DSON) and Carrara.  That was just to load and use a single character who used to be supported.  Going over how we got here just distracts from making things better now.
