Multiple Render Images

Has anyone created images of large scenes by using multiple renders.
I'm thinking of doing the back ground. Then over lay each character with the proper lighting applied.
I'm planning on using Paint Shop Pro to put them all together.
I could use some tips or any other advice anyone has to offer.
The scene I'm wanting to do will have a large crowd of undead
attacking a group of survivors.
Happy Rendering

In the past, what I've done is something like the following:
1. add a shadow catching ground plane
2. start with the zombie(s) in the back and the shadow catching ground plane visible, and make everything else in the scene invisible
3. render to png (with transparency)
4. make everything in the scene invisible except for the next closest zombie(s) and the shadow catching ground plane
5. render to png (with transparency)
Rinse & repeat 4/5 until you've got all your zombies/survivors rendered, and then layer the results in your favorite 2D image editing software.
Note 1: You can do this all in DAZ by making each finished render your BG in DAZ as you go.
Looking forward to seeing your results!
