So, is this an iray setting or shaders?
No, no shaders. Just me seeing if it could be done. One thing I noticed is that iray rendered a *lot* faster. Almost faster then 3Delight, which for me is saying something as I have a old computer that has never completed an iray render *ever* before.
Attaching the settings for her skin. I'll also make a shader and put it on ShareCG. My username there is spearcarrier.
The trick, I found, was in backscatter. One time I had it almost cel shaded, but lost those settings in my play.
Backscatter likes to backscatter the environment, which means the top half of her would go dark. To get around that I had to put her in a lit sphere.
I Like the renders though.
I can't wait to play with them
Yeah I'll probably play wit it more in the future.
Very nice effect, it really looks drawn!
Nicely done! Thank you for sharing this.
Really like the results.
Yeah, I had noticed that backscatter had an annoying tendency to just be lit and ignore shadows. Heh. Perfect for this!
Wow thanks, I just found it on ShareCG. Will have to try it :)
Neat, I just saw this on ShareCG, need to give it a go! Thanks!
wrong thread!
Sorry for unearthing this thread but I don't understand the lit sphere part here. Is this refering to creating a sphere primitive with everything (character, camera) inside and changing the sphere material to emissive? Because when doing so it takes 10 minutes for 10 iterations on my PC. You mentioned how it renders for you quite fast so I must have something misunderstood or my setup is wrong.
If I remember right, then yes it was a lit sphere that everything was inside becaues iray will do shadows no matter what, and I did'nt want them. I'm sure playing with that concept would also create some interesting effects. Maybe just creating a single light source and amping it up so you only get a little shador or something.
As for puter speed - wow. I was under the impression that the more light iray has to work with the faster it will go. I don't know why it slows your puter down. I confess I throw as many resources as I can at my puters, so I can't use it for a comparison.
Ok thank you that makes a lot sense now. Getting rid of the complex shadows and add only simple ones is exactly what I hope to get for a non 3D toon look.
My default scene with the same character but environment lit and one point light produces around 280 iterations in 10 minutes so its about 28 times faster. I tried to limit the sphere segments and sides as they usually recommend simpler shapes when using emissive primitives but maybe more will work better here or using a one sided material. I will have to experiment some more.
Well dang! That's a fantastic find!
