Can You Change One Part of an LIE Image with Scripts?

Is there a way to change just one part of an LIE with scripting? For example, if I have set up an lie that has a base image, a layer with a mask, then another layer with a mask, is there a way to change just one of the mask images with scripting? Or maybe the layer color without resetting the whole image?
