What Wendy said.  That, plus Fenric's Ivy Generator.

check out the organic part of model room

ie outine roots with polyline, select them thenm click construct>organic , then fix the result :)

    what @Headwax says

I do a rough shape of roots with the polyline then push them up and down then fill then use the construct-organic tool

then I untriangulate and smooth and fix the weird bits... there's always weird bits wink

I'm late to the game here but Lisa's creepy trees have some nice, ugly roots.  There were several versions of these.  Looks like Daz store doesn't have them anymore but just checked Renderosity and they are still available.  I assume 8.5 still takes .obj files.  Maybe put them in modelimg room and chop off the parts they you don't want

Or if it works with the rest of your scene just chop off the top in whatever editing program you use.  Or could they be rendered on own layer an be trimmed on that layer?  Haven't used that in a loooong time.

OK. I did some experiments and found the following solution. First the tree created without a root. Then duplicated the tree and now only set 1 generation in the plant editor. Then changed the trunk so that it gave a nice shape. all settings affecting the appearance of branches to 0. now back out of the editor, tilted the trunk by 90° and duplicated it 5 times, then placed it around the tree and changed everything in the editor. Finally, the branches are placed from further copies of the roots.

if I want to place the tree I have to lower it further or adjust the roots.
