Getting on the 9 train, or not

  • Have already a significant amount of Gen9 stuff but cannot help it, still feel quite alienated by Gen9. For me in daily usage Gen9 does still feel more a step backwards than an improvement.

I have an unlimited boarding pass for the G9 train and ride it often and it's usually a great trip, although sometimes lacking in the amenities I am used to when riding the G8 train. Sometimes I need to go where the G9 train doesn't (yet!!), so I ride the G8 or G8.1 train to get me to those places. It's not about the train or the ride, but the destination.

I use G9. I also use G8.1, G8, G3 and I even still use G2. And every now and then, when I'm feeling adventurous, I even use David 5. ;) With spruced up Iray textures, they all look great and if a clothing item I want to use doesn't fit a character of a generation it wasn't made for as well as I'd like, I'll use the generation it was made for. Nothing keeps me from using any Genesis I want, so I don't limit myself ;). I got a bunch of stuff for all of them (except maybe Genesis 9 so far, but I'm workin' on it).

overall the best way. I still mess with V4 once in awhile. I'm still not seeing a really good reason for me to move to G9. maybe the expressions are better. the part that bothers me is compatibility. I havent tried from G9 back. will do so. I do have 2 female G9 characters, a couple hairs, and whatever free items have popped up here. I bought the morphs packages. expressions and essential adds, the bundle when i got it for $15. Couldn't refuse. I like the base skin testures. The new ones seem overall more of the same as previous versions. Women, or men, when in an image, other than closeup, really could matter less what version.

  • FSMCDesigns: You are not a railfan if you think any railway journey is incidental and not the main event ;). I know what you mean, though. I am still saddened at how little G9 stuff falls into my 'Must Have' category, generally I get a 'That's Quite Nice' vibe at most. Definitely not what I've been hoping for. Regards, Richard

Hope to see more male g9 content for the men. Seems like everyday something new comes out for females.

From what I can see in the way of clothing and accessories there are quite a few sets, while made for the female form, can work just fine for the male form.  PLUS the neat thing with Genesis 9 is that folks don't have to beg for Trans shapes and makeups for a dedicated male figure like Genesis 3 or 8.  So that's a plus.  I'm still more of a lurker here as I have what I need for the Genesis 9 figure pretty much.  Every so often I'll pick up something that looks right or grabs me with a "oh wow, that's cools" but mostly I get scenes, hdri packs and bits like that.  When Dusk 2 eventually hits I'll have newer stuff to showcase him in.  In the mean time I look but mostly don't buy but I'm on board as much as I need to be... for now!

  • Honestly, if I can chime in to this convo, I'm happy to read the G8/G8.1 train into the sunset.  I've collected (bought) almost every G8/G8.1 bundle and I am happy with these selections.  For what I'm doing (working in Daz, iClone, Character Creator, and Cinema 4D), 8K skin is not a huge advantage or upside for me.  There are so many utilities out there that make working with G8/G8.1 so satisfying that there is simply no need for me to go up to the latest and greatest money grab.  Personally, I think anything new is more for the newbies instead of us old heads...lol.  We've worked around limitations for so long (me since 2004) that it's just a matter of choosing what we wish to be okay with.  Seems like going to G9 adds more to the Daz version of the paradox of choice. :)

Totally unimpressed with G9 so far.

Fewer material zones for the face?? Why?? If the bump on the lips is too hard, can't soften that without affecting the whole face. Can't "kitbash" other lips textures from other characters.

The breasts are just lumps on the chest. I thought this was a high-res mesh. V4 breasts are so much better.

    Major steps backwards.

Just not worth my time to play with.

On the other hand, I don't miss the G8 female proportions; they were lollypop girls–skinny body and huge head. I always had to at least increase shoulder width.

For me it was the other way around. They are all too large Marge. I have to narrow the ribcage and the hips on everything.

I am glad they joined the lips to the face in the surface materials on prior there was always such a sharp ine deliniating the lips from the face. Realism was never going to be achieved that way and for toon characters, either way is fine.

...well apparently the Daz+ Club hopped aboard. as the two new Daz+ items released tonight are for G9. May finally have to think about renewing my membership when it expires, particularly if G9 items end up as the monthly/weekly freebies

This is a natural progression. Whether individuals among us choose to use it or not, G9 is the current figure! The only surprise might be that it took this long for G9 items to appear there.

There has been a similar lag in previous generations, I suspect because + items are commissioned well ahead of release.

i grab the G9 free items if they can be used without a particular character. Why not really. The base characters are free. You start with 4 male and 4 female base skins. But to go all in, no. There are some hair products that look really good though that are very tempting.

if it's G9 and I want and can afford it I will buy it

but older stuff so much cheaper in sales

G8.1 the only one I hesitate over

I only buy what I need. Mainly MRs and characters which are love at first sight (or in bundles with cutthroat discounts)

...with all the merchant and other resource content I have for both G3 and G8 (which are also fairly cross-compatible with each other as they use the same basic mesh weight mapping, and UV), I think I'll be fine for a while.

Been spending a good deal of time porting my main characters over to G8, don't want to go through it all over again unless there is a very significant improvement (like soft body physics, improved bending, and more realistic musculoskeletal structure)..

I still have a few months on the membership to go and will make the best of it as I can, but when it expires, that may finally be the end of the line after 15 years of membership.

I'm a newbie compared to You, with being PC+/DAZ+ only for a couple years, but with the not so quite change to the sale strategy that excludes the monthly coupons being able to used for most sales I had decided to stop my commitment to DAZ+ even before it was automatically prolonged by mistake without a chance to undo that. So I'm stuck to DAZ+ to Spring 2024, hoping for many more non-generational freebies like plants, shaders and whatnots...

9 train. Haha! No, not yet - A couple freebies despite not downloading the essentials. No idea how that happened!.

It occurs to me, it's probably not that healthy to hang out on a shopping site all the time. Having already more stuff than one can ever really use, what exactly is the point to accumulating more? Not saying I won't - Even without spending much money, even without spending any money, more accumulates on its own, It's a rhetorical question, and it still seems a question worth asking. >_>

Not even JoeQuick's new anime figure is enough to sway me to get into G9, and you know how I love a good anime figure. Like, that's my thing.

I never saw a problem except on some lower quality textures. All the SASE textures, for example, have perfectly smooth transitions.

As the G8 uses the same textures for lips as it does for the face, if there's a sharp transition, that's because whoever did the coloring of the lips, didn't know how to do it properly

I suspect the only time a user perceives a sharp transistion is when the surface settings of the lip and face differ. This is pretty much the default case for the vast majority of G8 female characters available in the store, when invariable some gloss has been added to the lips, and often other settings like translucency and even colour balance could be different as well. This will give the appearence of a sharp line, and this is naturally unrealistic since make-up is not applied using an incredibly fine edge, and then never smudges.

Exactly. For those of us that like glossy lips, it was always easier to just increase the specular on the lips material zone with older generations. Not an ideal solution since it created a harsh line up close, but am easy and time saving one when working with multiple characters and skins. With G9 there is no material zone so you have to rely on a map to define the specular area which makes it much more realistic and probably why they did it this way, but a complete pain when working with multiple characters and textures. Luckily there are 3rd party makeup options in the various stores now that make it easier for G9 users, most of which use geoshells.

I am a hobo hopping trains when it comes to G9. I can't seem to settle down and accept the generation. My adventures with G9 began with Santa . . . or maybe it was the sleigh . . . or the reindeer but either way I was on board for that ride. I tend to drift away from much of the G9 destinations  . . . and frequently jump the train at most stops. So yeah, I hop the train, here and there, on the rare occasion, I ride the rails, but in all my train hopping I have never met V9 or M9, still elusive to this hobo on the fly.

Not sure if it's the right approach, but I want to give Genesis 9 another try.

I have never done anime so far, so I bought the Kiri-9-hd-anime-dark-bundle. If that doesn't get me on the 9 train, it remains a train bound for nowhere to me.

So far, I did not jump on the G9 train and stay with G8. I transferred a lot of stuff from V4/M4 and G3 to G8 and set up a decent workflow for G8 to native Blender characters. Jumping on G9 would mean a fresh update for my workflow. I would have hoped that G9 is more friendly regarding transfer to other applications, but it seems that it's not.

Maybe Daz should think about adding native Blender characters to their portfolio. Some items are already available in Blender, Maya and Cinema 4D format. G9+ for Blender would be great!
