thistledown's gallery thread

I suppose this is where I talk about what I've been uploading.  My main goal is to make the characters from my various role-playing games, but I'm still gathering the content I need for that.  So far I'm just practicing on whatever comes to mind.  I started poking at this in... February?  So I thought it was time to share a bit.  All of my renders are on a laptop with an NVDIA GeForce GTX 860M.

Most of my recent work has been seeing what I can do with the Iray engine on my computer - especially messing around with the shader presets.  Once I found out I could put a metalic preset on something without loosing the base texture I started to push my machine.  My go-to shader on these was Tom2099's Iray Mirror, and it gave me fantastic results with the Death Cap figure. (http://www.sharecg.com/v/81214/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/DAZ-Iray-car-related-shader-presets-megapack)

Here's the Death Cap mushroom made into metalic, but keeping its coloring.  It's what started the whole thing.

  • The Battle Girl figure is largely based on the Battle Angel Alita character, a series I'm quite a fan of.  As she's very cybernetic, I decided to see how the metal shaders looked on her.  When I tried to use her with Tom's mirror though, it often crashed the program, so I wound up using Aaron575's mirror shader instead. (http://www.sharecg.com/v/81125/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/Iray-Mirror-Shader)  It was much more stable, but the preview window was more difficult to work with.  Even then, I had to scale back the props in the scene a bit.  The rest of the props in the Battle Girl pictures are mostly shaded with Nobiax's free shaders. (http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/836087/#Comment_836087)  I particularly like how well his 001 - Metal Grate matched onto the long walkway.  The WIP renders (with more human skin) are in my gallery.

Yes, her face failed to get metalized, but every time I tried to re-create the render, the program crashed, so that's as much as it gets.  Still kinda works.

  • Once I'd gotten the initial scenes finished, I'd have a phrase come into my head and see what I could do with it.  The "Girl with Golden Hair" was from the Mama Mia soundtrack - it's using the gold shader for the hair, I think Copper for the skin.

Looks like I've got a bit of poke-through to fix on the bottoms.

  • Platinum blond is the Platinum shader for the Charm Hair, I think Copper for the skin, and the Art Deco Dress.

  • "The Iron Horse" usually refers to a train, but I tried to run with it on the Millenium horse.  Shown here is the default Iray Iron shader and the "Cast Iron Horse", again using Nobiax's shaders.  The rest are in my gallery.

This pair go back to the first round of messing around with Battle Girl, but I re-did them with the bikini for forum standards.  Since she's not fleshy anymore she might have been ok without it, but the cyborg patterning near the groin was a bit much, and the bottom without the top looked weird, so...

But I'm quite happy with how the bikini came out anyways.  It's the default Iray Gold, with rubber trim.  Alita herself is sporting I think Platinum skin with copper nails.

I'm going to see if I can put some water in that faucet, but that's probably all for today.

  • A close-up of the same piece, but with the water running.

  • These were for the freebie picnic contest.  The closer shot was submitted, the distant shot is from the other side.

And from the Urban Fantasy contest.  This one went together very quickly, and rendered probably the fastest of anything on here.  I love that the suit went on the troll with only a minor shoulder adjustment.  Yay for Genesis!
