Any Tips of File Management for Animation?

This is a rather elaborate project I'm animating in Daz...and I'm after any file management tips. For instance, I have a couple scenes in this story, and each scene has shots, and each shot has layers. I'm finding loading too many shots into one project file overtaxes that file. Is it best to break the scene down and have one project for each shot? It gets even more complicated when using Daz 32 for lip sync generation.
