Carrara Challenge 19: Above and Beyond - Winners Announced
Carrara Challenge #19 Above and Beyond
VOTING THREAD
WIP Thread is here:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/60434/carrara-challenge-19-above-and-beyond-wip-thread/p1
Voting Rules
1.Voting is open to anyone with a DAZ3D account.
2.Each person may vote for up to three entries. The order of your votes does not matter (i.e. do not vote for a 1st place, 2nd place, honorable mention etc. just list your three votes in any order).
3.Votes are per entry. If an artist has two images you wish to vote for, you may use a vote for each one, leaving you with one remaining vote to cast.
Anonymous Votes
1.Anonymous votes will be accepted with good cause, for example: if a forum moderator or admin wishes to vote without giving an appearance of favoritism.
2.Please PM Ncamp if you think you need to vote anonymously.
3.Anonymous votes for the challenge hosts (Ncamp and Diomede) will not be accepted.
Vote Counting
1.An artist may place in the top three or receive Honorable Mention only once per Challenge.
2.If an artist has enough votes to place more than once, the entry with the most votes will be the one that is placed, and the entry by another artist with the next highest vote total will be moved up.
3.In the event of a tie, there will either be a 2 day run-off period or a neutral third party will be asked to cast a tie-breaking vote.
4.The current Challenge host is not eligible to win.
Thank you again to our generous sponsor DAZ 3D for once again offering the following awards to the winners:
1st Place: $100.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s)
2nd Place: $50.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s)
3rd Place: $25.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s)
Honorable Mention: $10.00 towards DAZ 3D owned item(s)

Notes:
This is my take on the classic sci-fi image of a cloud city, seen through the viewport of an approaching ship. Buildings and city modeled and textured in Carrara. Clouds are volumetric clouds replicated on a large plane with fake cloud diffuse, bump and displacement created in Photoshop. Textures on the buildings are procedural with some masks made in Photoshop used to block out different sections of texture. The city base textures were made in Photoshop and FilterForge.

Notes:
A fantasy warrior and her hunting bird resting on a tall rock out-crop far above a forested valley with a distant lake, town and farmland.
The rock outcrop is a vertex cube exported to Sculptris Alpha (free and lots of fun to play with if you don't have it) where I roughed it up to make it look like rock before bringing it back to Carrara and applying a rock texure and bump map. The forested valley and hills are a terrain with a "distant forest" texture from FilterForge applied (diffuse, bump and displacement) and mixed with a little bit of noise to break up the tiling. The lake is just a plane with the distant water preset from one of Dartanbeck's sets applied (sorry, not sure which set it was from - I have it saved to my "frequently used shaders" folder as "Dartanbecks Awesome Distant Water" which is probably not it's original name ). The farmland is a terrain; the texture is a tiled "distant farmland" texture from FilterForge mixed by height with some procedural rock. The village is the preset from Powerage's Village Creator scaled down and placed in a replicator.
The hair is Carrara dynamic hair; I added a directional force to blow it to one side, ran the simulation and then rendered the frame I liked best. The hair has been duplicated and the second one has far fewer hairs and some wave and frizz added.

After upgrading to Win10 and a new graphic card, I have had problems when rendering with HDRI. So the lights in this is not optimal.

I used Long Locks for the hair: http://www.daz3d.com/long-locks
The skin shaders were the the Carrara optimized Reby Sky Elite textures:http://www.daz3d.com/v4-elite-reby-sky
The aircraft was a Carrara freebie by ntsly (thanks!), available at ShareCG: http://www.sharecg.com/v/28151/gallery/5/3D-Model/Fairchild-C-123-Carrara-6
I used elements from AoA's free Carrara ringmail shaders: http://www.ageofarmour.com/3d/free/carrara-chainmail-shaders.html
Notes: Most all of the linked clothing was modified as described in some of the WIPs to get the look I wanted for the costume. The textures were all replaced by my own textures using elements from AoA's ringmail shaders. The Reby Sky textures were also heavily modified by me to fake SSS. To speed render times, I also had to re-work elements of the aircraft shaders. Mostly to get rid of the reflections and retain an metallic look.
I wanted an iconic superhero scene, but I didn't want to do the usual heroes, so I thought about the Man of Steel's cousin (or niece?). I wanted an action oriented scene where she was the focus, yet I needed enough of what was going on so that the viewer could follow the action. I also wanted to avoid showing the insignia on the costume and cape, so I tried to pose the figure and cape in such a way as to hide those elements and yet have a sense of weight and action.

Time for voting to start. The voting thread is open for one week. Anyone with a Daz account can vote. Order does not matter. Just list 3 entries that you approve of and nominate an honorable mention. The image (not artist) with the most votes wins. Second most if not by the same artist gets second. Etc. For full voting rules, see first post in this thread.
And I will start the voting. Remember, order does not matter.
My 3 votes
- Entry 2, Oblivion, by FifthElement
- Entry 10, The Architect's neighbor's second cousin's brother in law, by Philemo
- Entry 12, Formula Sky, by Varsel
My suggestion for Honorable Mention -
- Entry 14, The Watchers, by Stezza

A lot of wonderful images this month - it's always so hard to narrow it down, so I'm just going to go with my impulsive first instinct and vote for (in no particular order):
For Honorable Mention I'd like to nominate Entry #10 The architect's neighbour's second cousin's brother in law by Philemo. I'm a huge fan of surrealists like Magritte and this really reminds me of some of those works.
Great work from everyone and thanks to Ncamp and Diomede for taking on the hosting duties this month!
Guess I missed the deadline, but anyway...

I like the mixture of very realistic (main character, sky) and symbolic (angels, rainbow)
