Welcome, daybird, that is a good start. As this contest is about Depth of field (DOF) I think as well you shoud use it to fous the watchers attention on her face. I wouldnt change the background for now, once you have the DOF higher the background blurrs. If you then still think you want it different , that is no problem.
KA1 while this is a nice render I would definitley go with the action story, I really would like to see that finished
Yes, i use Iray 2h. Now i try to implement your suggestions. Render time is now by 10000 ( still running ), but i have the feeling, the grainy is still there.
You're right - the skull is facing right into a point light so its lost its spookiness and just looks like its grinning as the viewer. Thats just the way skulls look, there is no morph or expression on it. I think he's grinnin because he apparently died without any pants on. And don't worry about cliché, this is totally a "side of the van" sort of skeleton.
New project.
When I saw that yellow street sign in the street sign pack that was released a couple of days ago I knew what I had to do. Today I got the Big Afro hair in the PA festival and my plans could be set in motion...
Comments and suggestions appreciated. I feel I'm lacking something to focus on. Perhaps add a person to the pickup truck? Even though the big hair people are the pun I don't feel they need to be in full focus and prefer to keep them a bit on the edge of the field of focus.
isidorn, I would suggest that you balance out your colors. You have two bright yellow spots they draw the eye and you don't see the rest of the image because of this.
and the yellow sign could do with some age and grime added, like the other signs, to fit in better
Thanks for the suggestions DollyGirl and Chohole! Those are good points and I did think the car looked a bit too clean. Didn't realise the same about the sign, but it's true. I don't know how to make them dirtier though...
Mhh, it seems that Daz is crashed. No progress since two hours :(
I like the duck hiding in the garbage can! Maybe cound be hidden a little more and grunged up a bit too, but nice little touch.
I have had that happen on a few occasions too. The hours just pass by but nothing new happening. It's better when it actually crashes because then you know for sure you have to start over.
After 7h i break the render. Not sure about the DOF.
I get that a lot too. Its frustrating me with the Tomb pic since it seems to take forever and it actually isn't doing anything. Probably an issue with lights, reflective materials and iray.
Hey, you got the grain off her nose. The DOF could be a little stronger, but thats just my opinion.
You can either change the materials or just grunge up the image itself. Doing a flat sign it might be easier to just add some couple of grungey brush strokes with GIMP or Photoshop, but with the vehicle it becomes difficult to follow the curves and angles. If you want to change the materials themselves just open them in GIMP, make SURE to save them as something else - you don't want to destroy the mats it came with, then kind of make the mats messy however you want. Then reload that image into the diffuse channel and there you go. (Sounds easy but I haven't had much good looking success with it, so take my advice with a grain of salt).
Rerendered after all with slightly changed lights and adjusted skeleton. I had a lot more grain effect so used the older image and used a mask to cover the problem areas. I lot some blue/green sheen on the pots but it got rid of a lot of issues.
I like the skeleton head now. Almost a defiant, evil laugh type of pose. "Haha!! You think you can sneak up on me!!!!"
I'm not an iray person but I would agree that there is something fishy about it. If it was my render I'd stop it and restart (maybe even restart DS) but then I'm used to 3dlight render times...
You gave me the laugh of the day, Thanks!
The render quality setting will increase your render time significantly.Think of it as a multiplier for render time.A setting of 2 will double it,3 will triple it.I've tried it before and I couldn't tell much difference in realism or quality with a settings ranging from 0 and 500.Here's the screen shots I took :)
The one marked Render Quality 500 ran for 24 hours, I don't recall how many samples it got, but it wasn't very many, and it didn't get past 2% convergence.
there is this little item in the shop If you are willing to buy something https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_10542
I used it and liked it in quiet some renders. Otherwise you can make a grunge map yourself (Photshop/GIMP) and add that in the LIE of the sign and the car surfaces, works really good as well (makeit tileable, then you have more options to use it) but the LIE can be annoyingly slow.
ok,,here is my next WIP.I'm not sure what I want to call it just yet,,I'm terrible with names :(
here is one with Vicky in a difierent top,,I like this blue color better, I think I might go ahead and enter this one.I'm pretty happy about the way it came out.
Very nice! How did you do that background? Is it an HDRI image and the girl and the car are the only models?
Yes,,and it renders very quickly as well :) I set the dome to Finite with ground, and adjusted the ground scale as best I could.
The only light is the HDRI, then the 2 other items,,,well her clothes and the smoke I used for steam coming from the trucks radiator.
Thanks for the link and suggestion! (though the link goes to my product library, but with the product number at the end of the url it was easy enough to find in the store ) Follow up question: The bundle looks very useful but it says it's for DAZ 2 and 3. Will it work with 4.8 and Iray?
Also a big thanks to Joe Webb for the "dirtying" instructions. I really need to get me one of those editors and find some time to start learning how to use them... I think my biggest problem here is finding time for my DAZ hobby.
What lighting are you using in your Scene? At nearly 7 hours, the convergance was less than 31%. What are your machine specs, processor, RAM etc?
There is DOF evident on the hand. I think it still boils down to not having enough light in the scene, but it may do better on a higher spec machine. You have to work with the tools you have I'm afraid.
I have a intel i3-2100cpu 3.1 Ghz, 4Gb ram, 64bit, windows 10
Lightsources are a distant-, a spot- and a pointlight( the light in the shack)
oopsi, I took the link from my product library instead of going to the store site of the product.
I have never tried to use it in Iray, so I'm not sure about that but with 3dlight in DS 4.8 no problem. I would expect that you might need to apply the IRAY uber base shader on the surfaces you made dirty.
I think the 4GB RAM is your biggest problem here. Win 10 64 bit must take up a great deal of that, then with DAZ Studio running as well, Iray has very little left to play with. Long render times are going to be the norm I'm afraid.
Considering the limitations that you have with your hardware, I think you did an excellent job on the render. If it is possible to upgrade your RAM, it would make a massive difference to just add anothe 4GB if possible, worth thinking about for the future.
