Manhunters Gamma

So I would like to create a comic book project with Daz, but before I start, I want to lock down a illustration style.  So I did a short 8 page issue to test it out.  I could use some opinions from outside readers because when I work on stuff I can overlook things that are obvious.

I'm not going for photo-realism because the render times would drive me insane.  I'm going for more of the traditional comic book inking style, trying (operative word) to imitate the hand painted art style of Alex Ross (comic book readers would know who he is).

Anyway, you can be honest.  If you don't like something just say so.  I know I can't please everyone and everyone likes different things.  So are the illustrations  dynamic enough?  Can you read the word bubbles?  Are the colors too saturated?  Stuff like that would help.  Thank you.

The 8 pages will be attached in the following posts.

  • The angles and page layouts are fine. And the words are clear (what software did you use by the way?). My only criticism is that it's a bit too bright/shiny. I don't know if that's because of too many lights or too much ambient colour on the objects (or maybe my own comic attempts are too dark?). The cover isn't as bright and works better in my opinion.

  • SteveM17, thanks for the input.  I'll take a second look at the bright/shiny aspect.  I'm trying to copy the style of my favorite comic book artist Alex Ross and his hand painted style is usually very high contrast, high color saturation, and printed on very glossy paper, making his books very vibrant and shiny (not sure if I'm allow to post some examples of his work here.  I'll try).  So I may have gone a bit over while trying to copy him.  I'll take a second look.  Thanks.

And the software I use are Daz3d and Photoshop.

  • Alex Ross is great, I agree. I think when people are very glossy in Daz or Poser, it can make them look a bit plastic. I would tone it down a touch, but obviously that's just my opinion. Did you use photoshop to add the word bubbles?

Yes, I used Photoshop to add the word bubbles.  You can draw them with the eliptical tool with a white fill and size it to however you like.

These are great, NoPicaso - thanks for sharing your work. I'm viewing on a 40" Samsung panel here, and they are bright, but they look fantastic. Looks like you're a fan of Topaz Labs, yes? They do have a number of excellent, and extremely useful, plugins.

Hope to see more of your work.

Greg, thank you very much for the encouragement.  40" screen, it must have almost been poster size, LOL.  Although I didn't use Topaz Labs plug-ins to make these pages, I have played with them before, and yes, they are a blast and a lot of fun.  Now that you remind me, I should dig them out and install them again.  Give me a bigger arsenal of artist tools to play with.

  • Playing around with some effects for the comic book.  Needed something for dimension hopping.  Thought about something like this.  Not quite sure yet.

  • Nice work!

Thank you, Cris.  Kind of you to say.  Still a long ways to go, but that's the fun.

  • Doing some character mock-ups and of course playing with special effects.

Here is a star scape I created in Photoshop.  I just wanted to see if I could make one without using premade backgrounds or 3D assets.  It came out ok but I should've paid more attention to the colors for the space gas and the texture for the planet. It's a little sloppy as I was more focused on the technical than the art. Anyway, at the end I remembered I had this space craft in my Runtime I had for a long time now and played with only once, so I threw it in there.
