thanks PhilW, I'll take another look at the scripts - what would you recommend?

  • PhilWPhilW Posts: 5,145

The PinMeDown script is useful and the mcjAutoLimb gives a psuedo-IK which is lacking from DS's animation tools. I am sure there are other useful ones but these are proving very useful on a project I am trying to get done.

So I got around to trying Njob, the normal map creator that was mentioned a few posts ago. It can not only make normal maps but also height maps from a standard photo, which can be used as either a bump map or a displacement map. I think I have mentioned before that Octane handles displacement incredibly - it does not require the object to be highly subdivided before the render as in Carrara, it performs it's own "runtime subdivision" - and I was surprised and amazed by the image below - which is just a primitive plane and a primitive sphere with the diffuse map and displacement map, rendered in Octane with an HDRI for lighting and background.

    That's impressive!

It was not quite what I expected when applying the texture from the plane to the sphere! Here's another one with a roof shingle texture.

I always wanted Crazy Bump but thought it was too expensive. Njob is not quite as slick, but it delivers simailr results - and it's free!

I saw something a few years back where you could take a single image and create an overlay with adjustable transparency on any application window to use as a tracing reference. Although I do not need that, it would be really handy to adjust the transparency if the images can float over application windows and you can still work in the application. Maybe Kuadro can do that.

Awesome tutorial, loaded with practical techniques and broad strategies.  I don't use Corel, but she addressed many issues I've had these past weeks.  Thanks!

Wow! So glad I was here at the right time! Truthfully, when I read this I was bummed out, knowing that this was a previous message that I've missed out on. Glad I was wrong!

So (thanks again to you, rk66 - I'm always thanking you for something! LOL) I now have a working version of Blacksmith 3D Standard 6!!! Rock on!

    Thanks rk66!!!

EDIT: Wow! This looks amazing! If I like it, I'm buying 7 Pro for sure! I suppose that's that big idea of the give-away, eh? 7 includes a hair modeler!!! :)

It is not installed yet on my computer, if you want, I can leave it for you!

Wow, that is a very generous offer, Dudu.  But I have version 3.3 of Blacksmith 3D. It would have been nice to get version 6 for free.  But I can not accept your files.  heart

I think it has to be installed before the deadline too. If you didn't install it already, you might just have a demo now.

  • DUDUDUDU Posts: 1,945

I didn't know that, it's in the trash can now...

now that's a nasty trick... not sure that inspires warm-fuzzy-product-buying-vibes to the folks that missed that detail...

I got the link after it had expired as well, but I'm curious what the new users here think of the software after playing with it for a while.

    ETA:

yay, looks like that very thread was created at: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/190236/blacksmith3d

is there fur presets out there for AM critters?

  • Okay, got one for you guys and gals.

It's over a week old (I should check my email more often), but since no one else has posted about it...

    * Free for Non-commercial use.  Not a demo - full software.  Only need to purchase a (low-cost, supports development) license if you use it for commercial projects such as selling here as a PA.  It is great to help you with your personal projects.

    - ShaderMap 4 :  https://shadermap.com/home/

If you guys thought Njob from several posts above was great.  This software is that one on steriods.  Crazy Bump style image map creation, coupled with nDo style normal/displacement map drawing, including mesh import as brushes.

This new version has so much more than my version 2 Pro, and it finally has generate maps from 3D models à la xNormal, Blender, or any other modeling software that bakes maps from meshes.

The free version has watermarks, but a license is reasonable.

stezza had a great squirrel fur ball job

  • I installed ShaderMap 4.  It states on the start-up splash screen that upgrading to Pro will give you watermark free maps, which implies that the non-commercial version maps are watermarked.

I am not getting any watermarked maps.  Neither within the software, sending maps to an external editor, or even when saving.

Now, this could be because I have version 2 Pro installed with an active license, but I find it hard to believe my V2 license is working for this new version (always a paid upgrade).  However, it could be a glitch, and my license activated Pro functionality in SM4.

Usually, there is a crippled demo (non-savable/no exports) one can download to test the software, and this is the first time I have ever seen him offering the software for non-commercial with savable attributes.  So, the splash screen could be left over from a decision to open up the software to non-commercial use with no watermarks.

Please, test it out and see.  Like I said, I am not getting watermarks, but you guys know my variable.

If you do get watermarks, then he is perpetrating false advertising (that would just be a demo - not even usable for ones own personal work), and I apologize to anyone burned from this.  If this is the case, then I just lost all respect for him, and won't be supporting his future efforts.

Sorry for any inconvenience if it does not work as advertised.
