    Icecrmn, I really like your start here and I have to say that I have not used any of the atmospheric tools around yet, so for me that part looks pretty good. What I would advise you to think about ist your composition, the lady seems to be pretty much on the right side thirds grid, while the gostly figure is way out to the side, while on the left side there is a lot of empty space. I would try a differrent format eg Portrait, to convey the length of the hallway but still reduce space to the sides. Additionally think about body language. there is a woman armed with a knife, why? She is afraid of something she doesn't know yet what, she will definitely not push out breast and butt ;-)

    yeah,I didn't like the pose that much either, it's actually parts of diiferent poses that were meant for V4 that I tried to fix up.I'm still not a very good poser :P .I'll see if I can straighten her out a bit.

    I'll play with the camera angle today and see what I can do with that.The more I look at it the more it does look sort of "half full".

    ok,,here's what I got so far . I disarmed my vulnerable maiden, gave her a candle to light her journey into the foreboding hallway, posed grim outside a bit better( this will be easier to see after the render clears up a bit)

    oddly,,I didn't have any "innocent" type night clothes to put her in. :)  So I made her one using the MFD(Morphing fantasy Dress) and Wilmaps lace shaders.For the new people that haven't found this little gem yet, it's here http://www.daz3d.com/morphing-fantasy-dress-for-genesis-2-females

    (this one is $2 for PC+ members also), there are ton's of textures for this that turn it into everything from a slinky cocktail mini, to an elaborate ball gown fit for any queen. I was really wanting an old fashioned poet style shirt to put her in , an over sized one, but can't seem to track one down at the moment.

    the second one seems a bit easier to use for a beginner :)

    if I type in "blue" in the search box for it.,,at the bottom of the page it gives me several "color schemes"

    If I follow this correctly, these colors would be my "pallete" to choose from when coloring things in my scene?

    btw,,it also gives the color codes to put in the Surface tab to make the colors :) (RGB decimal numbers look like the ones we would use for Studio)

    Okay changed the position in the picture and added some different plants to kind of frame her and the jelly fish.   I will be looking into the shaders as soon as I can, They are now on my wishlist.

    Why not give it a try, looking for  more beams instead of the fog. 

     

    Glad you are going to give the contest a whirl lucasdestoop. To better help you though I need to know more information. What story do you want to tell. I see an angle at a gate. Need to know what you rendered the image with was it Iray or 3Delight or something else. And what you did to get what you got.

    This is much closer to what I want to do.  But the water reflection and the darkening around the edges was done postwork.  So I don't think it counts does it?

    Finally done creating my scene :)  

    I tried to give it a moody feeling this time :P , hope you like it! and I will be happy to hear any suggestion you have in mind!

    Trixter, welcome. I like the level of ambient light in your image. That really helps to draw the eye to her face and sets the mood well. I think if I were working on this image I would figure out a way to balance the lantern in the corner with something with an equal amount of light in the upper left hand area. Another latern or the moon that is now in the center of the render. I would see if I could get sufficient light levels from these two sources to bring out the details but not wash out the night sky. I think too that I would have her left hand holding up her head and have her looking at the camera. Where her hand is would be the perfect place for her head to be. You can see why I say that by looking at the attached image and seeing where the grid lines cross.

    ok,,this is what my WIP looks like after around 3 hours of rendering.The windows are now a more central part , so I'll look to see if I can find an image or hdri to put in the background to fix that.

    I put a spotlight in the backroom and I can't seem to get any light from it.I've set the luminous Flux values ranging from 5k to 200 million so far with no difference in result.So something is blocking the light in that empty room.I'll solve that mystery tomorrow.

    I spent a few hours on google looking for poses, but I mostly found page after page of  smiling black and white close up face portraits (some where in color) that had nothing to do with full body poses, so I've not made much ground on that yet.Would someone be so kind as to link a few poses that would work for me? Thank you in advance :)

    So, I've decided to bite the bullet and join the party.  Here is my WIP for this month's contest.  I'm not happy with the lighting yet and I want to add some fog, just have to figure out the how.  I'm rendering in Iray which makes it a little difficult.  I do have the AtmoCam for Iray and I have Sickleyield's youtube video on volumetrics in Iray bookmarked so between the two, I should be able to get some fog in there.  I want it in the background behind the character low to the ground.  We'll see how it goes.  This render is only at about 60%.  I stopped it short as it was mostly a test render and I already knew there were things I need to change and figure out.  Comments and suggestions welcome.

    Your welcome Sonja11. Yes I can see where you have gotten the light to play on Anemone's skin. I notice that the name of your piece is Anemone and the Jellyfish. I think a good thing would be to have Anemone looking at the Jellyfish. I would also see if the pink light's the intensity can be reduced or bumping up it's decay value so that it does not hit the floor of the sea. You can find these parameters under the parameter tab when you have the light selected. I would also add some plants where the floor and wall meet to break up the transition. This would make the scene seem larger. I would also rethink Anemoene's. It looks a bit uncomfortable. If you have the inclination I find that if I am not happy with a pose I go in front of a mirror and put myself in the pose. Gives me great insight as to what is comfortable and what is not.

    Nice progress icecrmn. So I noticed that I can use Gen 4 poses fairly safely on G2F and thought maybe this set might have something you could use: https://redeyecat.wordpress.com/2014/09/28/halloween-treat-04-haunted-house-poses-m4v4/ I also found this google search to be of interest.     I did this with 3Dlight and ubervolume. 

    I imaging being somewhere dark and spooky. A place where you hear an owl in the distance, leaves whispering. A place where you are in doubt if you should walk back or not. The angel or not makes the choise a bit harder. Something like that :)

    Thank you dollygirl for the links.I've been working on my characters pose a bit this morning before I go out for a bit, and I'm starting to think that maybe having people in my scene is just too much of a distraction.I'll redo it when I get home with the people removed and see if I can make some progress on just making an atmospheric scene.

    Knittingmommy, so glad you can come and play with us. You have a nice composition going on and I think that your thought of adding some fog is a good idea. When I checked the rule of thirds I noticed an opportunity to help the flow of the image and that was putting a pointy dagger in his left hand and have the point point at his chin. I think the metal would add another layer of interest. I am a girl that likes bling and a pretty shinny knife seems to be just the ticket here.
    One of the things I do, to test if my lighting is at a level that enhances the render is to pull it into my graphics program and do an adjust lighting pass over it. If after the pass, I like the image better then I know I need to bump up the ambient lighting just a bit more. I did that with your image and I do like what I see better. The reason is that with a bit more ambient he is separated from the background. There is a nice transition between his face, his hood, and then on to the brighter streets. This kind of thing makes your eye work to "look" at your image. Your fog may do that but you were saying that you wanted it to be lower. So I think pushing the ambient just a tiny bit might help with getting the separation that is needed to create interest and realize what white and shinny teeth he has.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, DollyGirl.  I'll try what you suggest about the ambient lighting.  However, I may have more questions as I'm still working on issues I have with lighting my my distinct lack of knowledge when it comes to it.  As for the knife idea, that might be a good one.  I'll play around with it.  I had been thinking, perhaps, a cane or walking stick, but a knife might work.

    Icecrmn, sometimes you just need to back away from a sticky issue and let your brain do some noodling. I like the fact that you are using people in your scene. It adds to the story but if you are having to fight it then life is to short and maybe another day will see this vision come true. I did go through my poses for V4 and found DMR Lynettes Dark Nights, in it was a pose that I thought would work for a damsel. Below are four renders of the modified pose so that she can hold her candle. I think that the pose evokes fear in a very elegant way. It does make you have to rethink about clothing her. Because a conforming long dress just can't manage that serious a bend at the hip and then such a wide spread of the legs. You could go DAZ dynamic with this OptiTex dress.  It might work. But anyway. You gotta do what you gotta do.

    Your welcome, lucas. Good information there. So it looks like you do know how to use ubervolume. My suggestion would be to adjust the opacity of the cone the uberlight is using to see more distinct god rays.
    What I have done in the attached image is add the sweet spots from the rule of thirds and I have run your image through the adjust lighting pass. The sweet spots are where you want to put your owl, interesting trees, where you might want to put the person that has to face the angel and the gate. With the adjust light pass I now see your shadows from the gate and fence these add interest to the image. I think you need to bump up your ambient lighting just a bit, ie make the moon light source brighter. I would suggest you texture your ground as well. One that I like is from ForbiddenWhispers and David Brinnen. They have many but this one is in the PC so if you are a member then for 4 bucks this is not a bad deal.

    Your welcome KnittingMommy. I think the cane would be great. I think this one by LuxXeon is very pretty. It is in obj format but if you go to file ->Import you can get the model into DAZ studio. He has provide the texture and bump files as well but you will have to manually apply them. On the questions about lighting fire away. This is a learning area and if we can't answer them then we will find you a place where you can get answers.

    Okay Sonja11, looks like you did not get an answer from the people in the know. After reading the rules I think your assessment of being an unacceptable type of postwork for this month is correct. I would suggest that you crank up the light to some big amount so that you can see the effect of the gel light. Then start to back off on the illumination until you are happy with the overall lighting. That is what I do when my lighting just does not want to work for me and I don't know why. If that does not work, my next step is to remove all of the lighting and start over. Drastic but sometimes we tend to hold on to something that is blocking our way and when we have to start all over good things start to happen.

    Hi Sonja11, I've done my trial for underwater scene, and finally I've come out with this render. "I'm not using it for this month contest" I hope this help you in your scene.

    I've noticed that your jellyfish glowing light reflected on the sand, maybe you can use pointlight and put it inside the Jellyfish with 50% intensity, and change the light color to match the Jellyfish skin as you can see in this sample render.

    Please don't think I'm stressed, I'm not :)
    I have a hard time converyiong my thoughts in written word, that's probably why many people think I'm angry or stressed when they read what I have written.

    As for my render,,well,,I really wanted to depict the short story type scene I wrote about earlier in the thread.I'm just sure how to go about doing so.Most of the premade poses I've used end up with my character in an overly sexualised position,which is detracting from what I really had intended to depict.

    I think I've gotten the atmospheric part right.I spent some time looking at the works of others to get an idea of what I wnated to do with the lighting and the general location.

    I wanted to depict an old mansion style home in the middle of the night with the lady of the home getting up in the middle of the night to find out what the scary noises were coming from.

    When I say old I mean like 9th century type old, something like that.That is why I had her with the dagger and in night clothes.

    I wanted my scene to feel huge in that cavernous hallway in the middle of the night.

    again,,please remember, I'm not stressed or mad or angry,,I'm just new to some of these more advanced sciences of composition,body language, scene positioning and stuff like that.Up until now most of my stuff has been pretty basic.So I may not understand some of it right away, and it might take me a few tries to get somethig usable. :) I'll have more questions along the way. :)

    Thank you DollyGirl and H_habash.  I see exactly what you mean on the jellyfish thank you!  and DollyGirl I am pretty sure you are right on the postwork as well lol.  I can't figure out why the caustics are causing my background to completely turn invisibile but will continue to muck about until I either figure it out or give up and try something else lol.

    Okay, I want to do a scene with some fog in it but would like to learn to do it using a world coordinate pass and a compositing engine. Does anywone know how to do a world coordinate image using one of the renderers in Daz? I am assuming you have to use shader builder. I asked this question over on the nuts and bolts forum but nothing much yet over there, so I thougth some of you might know.

    Great Sonja11. Your render is coming along nicely. So I did some research and found that all of the DAZ Environment surfaces come in with an Ambient color of black. If you change this to white you will see the backdrop again. Now white might make the walls of the Environment to bright and wash out your caustic effect if that is so then go to a mid grey like 164 164 164. I would play with different grey values for this parameter and see what you get and what you like. Also I think some bubbles will help seal the deal on the underwater scene like h_habash used in his scene. If you downloaded the Underwater Land set there are bubbles in there.

    You are doing good. There is improvement so that means you are learning how to do things. Really looking forward to seeing what you do.
