What are Tonemappers?

I haven't worked with Daz in a couple years and note that things called "tonemappers" appear in my scene file. What are they?

The Tonemapper 9and Environment) options nodes are items that you can select to get access to their respective render settings (exposure settings, environment mode and maps). Without the node the settings in those groups will take their default values.
