Where do I find the Props / Objects?

Hi,

I just purchased the "Free Weights Gym" Product.
Now I try to find the props to load into a scene (as I did for a lot of the other products I purchased earlier).

But under the "props" category there only seem to be the material settings. And they are not catogerized as metrial or pose settings !!
To load the reals props I have to change to the "Product" main-category (and have to search under the letter "F").
Why isn't it possible to have an overall unique structure for all products to find the scene-objects (props) under a certain folder structure in the "DAZ3D -> Studio -> myLibrary"-path, i.e. -> environment -> interior -> "product name" or -> Presets -> Poses ->"product name", or -> environment -> exterior -> "product name", etc. ??

For every new product you purchase you have to search where the loadable scene props can be found.

It is really annoying !!

This item : http://www.daz3d.com/free-weights-gym is in Poser Format, so you will find it Poser Formats > My DAZ 3D Library > Figures/Props, and the materials (for Poser) will be in the Pose folder, that is how it was done (it is a fialy old item)   You may need to go to DAZ Studio Formats to find the (DS( materials for it.

    Hi Jimmy,

yes of cause, I found it after some time of searching. And the result was this thread I started.

It is really annoying that for each product you have to search where the scene elements are (Why are materials settings under Pose ??). Once found you can adapt them to your own needs (I reworked the surfaces due to iRay) and move them into your own folder structure.
For the future DAZ better should intrduce a standard path-set all products have to follow.

Welllllll - for the older products you will have to live with the old Poser workarounds (or can you see a PA sitting down and rework a some years old Poser item to be found in Dazcontent or Daz3d reworking all 7065 items they have under DazOriginals ...?)

The Materials under Pose were a workaround because Poser had no possibility to apply all textures for a material once upon a time. You had to go to the Runtime/Textures folder and apply each map by hand - each time ... so matposes in the Poses folder were a great loophole.

For the future products you will have no problems (as long as you aren't a Poser user who deplores the lack of Poser content), because Daz3d QA makes sure the new items are following the new DazStudio folder structure.

And if you are looking for the paths for older products, you can take a look at the Readme (very old products have it included in the Readme's folder, newer ones you can find here: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/start or by clicking on the "i" after the items name in DIM ...)

Splitting these up into various format categories only adds needless layers of complexity really. What difference is it going to make in the end if it all works in Studio anyway?

I would much rather have a Walmart type experience where the car tires aren't in the baby food section. laugh

Can't we have just simple categories like departments in a retail store?

You can create your own Categories inside DAZ Studio, and you can put anything, anywhere YOU want it to go.

This does not interfere in any way with where the content is actualy installed to, so no broken paths, it just uses the DB entry, and you get the best of both worlds

Will DIM respect these custom categories? Will it still be able to install to and update my content library?

Can I remove the root catagories "Daz Studio Format" and "Poser Format", and make my "retail store" environment?

If so , this sounds like a good deal.

DIM will respect your custom categories and can still install to and update products -- however if the update changes the file names or file paths you'll need to re-categorize those items.  Make sure you periodically use "Content DB Maintenance" > "Export User Data" so that you can re-import it if needed (if you replace your computer, for example).

The root categories can't be removed, but I leave my Content Library pane on the Categories section so I'm always presented with that view.

there is really need for documentation.
For example I tried to apply one of the weight lifting poses to a G1 character I put into the gym (and selected, of cause). But nothing happened !!
    How to do?
What character generation they are made for?

Probably Michael 4 — very old content, remember. If I have my dates right, this came out a year or two before D|S4 and the very first Genesis store items. Note that this also means it can never take advantage of the content management system that's now built into D|S, the extra data needed in the content installers to do this literally doesn't exist, and would have to be created and added manually; not an easy or quick job.

Although you shouldn't have "nothing happening", Generation 4 poses can be applied to Genesis, but they're usually a bit off, because of the different arm and leg joint structure and different starting pose. Which pose did you try? Many of them are in pairs, one to place the M4 figure, one to place the weights bar in his hands. If you apply the wrong pose, I think you will get nothing happening.

Not never, quite a lot of the older content has metadata now.

Metadata for DIM, which I think should be pretty much everything by now, or metadata for the CMS and Smart Content? A lot of the older content I've been reinstalling over the last year or so seems to be only updated to be DIM-capable.

They're still working their way through the older items, but they do seem to have the intention of updating everything that works in DS with CMS metadata AFAICT.

The store page says: Compatible Figures: Michael 4, The Freak 4

Apart from that - M4 poses should work to some extend on G1
(with a bit of distortion which can be corrected with the free scripts
    http://www.sharecg.com/v/60135/browse/21/DAZ-Studio/Genesis-V4-pose-adjust-script
    or
    http://daz.tall-tales-racing.com/resources/freebies/genesis/GnResetHandFeetTranslation.zip )
    ... I am puzzled.

    The store page says

    • 28 M4/F4 poses
    • 8 equipment poses

You are sure you are not using an equipment pose on the figure? Sorry for asking dumb questions ...

  • AndySAndyS Posts: 1,438

    Tja,

OK, I think it is because of the huge confusion with the different character generations.

If I have a look into the materials of the G1 characters, I ever see, that they are Michael 4. The textures are in the /M4 folder and the UV-set is M4 too. So I thought the G1 character is M4, or at least 100% compatible.
So you say, the V4 adjustment script is able to perform the correction for the male characters too? - Oh yes, it worked.
    Very helpfull links.
    Thank you.

There is the mesh - and there are the textures/UVmaps.

The mesh of Genesis and it's rigging/bending (Genesis is weightmapped) are very different from Generation4 rigging (classical rigging for Poser, no weightmaps).

The UVmaps for Generation4 - which tell the computer where to put what part of the texture -  have been added to the free base Genesis.

For Genesis2Female you have to buy http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-for-genesis-2-female to get the texture maps of V4 to apply to Genesis2.
