I cannot create a transparent background

I have been trying to create a .png of a character with a transparent background.  I have followed all of the on line advice: turn done and grojnd off, save as .png.  I get an image of the figure with a black background that is not transparent.  Photoshop treats it as a solid backround.

Transparent background is the default so it should work.

Make sure you have not added anything odd to the scene (e.g. one of those environment domes), in Render/Environment switch off "Draw Dome" and in the Environment tab (separate tab from Render Settings) make sure the Type drop-down is set to "None". Also, make sure you are not rendering to any canvas (under Render Settings / Advanced).

If that fails, open up a brand new scene, add a primative to it and click render and save that to png - check to see if that has a black background and if not then there is something else in your scene that is adding this.

This is all assuming you are rendering with iray - if not then disregard this post.

I have done all of those steps prior to this post.  I redid them, and it still gives me a black background.  In fact, if I render with absolutely nothing in the scene, I get the same background.

Is there an alpha channel (Channels pane in Photoshop)? Ther imageitself isn't transparent, that is handled by a mask/transparency channel and PS may not be applying it. Also, have you got a backdrop enabled in the Environment pane in DS?

Check the file in G.I.M.P, it might just be a change in Photoshop.

-There is no alpha channel in the channels pane

    What is GIMP?

     Free image editor.

Actually if one does a 'spot render' where there are no objects, that will show the checkerboard indicating a transparent background.

I forgot to mention that.  When I spot render the figure, I do get a transparent background.  But when I do a full render, there is a solid color background.

In GIMP, the image also appears to have a black background.

What happens if you create new scene, add a cube and render?

What render engine do you use?

If spot render works and the regular rending does not then it's either the camera which is being used or your general render settings. Try rendering the viewport.

I created a new scene, with only a primitive cube, dome and ground off, backdrop none, Same result.  Then, I added a canvas and could see nothing on render but black.  Then I deleted the canvas, and now it seems to work.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
