Black vertical lines slicing through scene

This has just happened: one particular scene, which I opened again this morning, suddenly has these two thin black lines slicing down through the scene, top to bottom, going through the character (but not at world centre - just off).  You can pan around them and they stay in place.  They have no geometry.  I've tried hiding and/or deleting objects in the scene to no avail.  Interestingly, in Iray mode, the top half of the shot is black, at around 90% opacity, as if I'd put a heavy gauze or filter over it.  This happens with every camera in the scene.

So far it's only affected this one scene, but it would be good to know what's happened should it crop up anywhere else.

Might have something to do with an image in use in the Render Settings.
