How to use dforce to make clothes fall down on floor or on bed or in someones hand.

Hi I was using a dforce trick to remove a present dforce and adding a dynamic dforce on the cloth object and it use to work fine but for very limiting clothes. But I am not sure how do I use this method for some other clothes. In the following image I am using a Genesis8 wardrobe underwear but instead of following on the ground it self wrapping itself and looking very wiered at the end of the simulation. Is there is any other method I can use to achieve the same result?

There is no visible image in your post.  That said, if I am understanding you correctly, you want a clothing prop which is not fitted to the character to fall in the simulation to the floor, is that correct?  Or perhaps just to dangle like this?:

  • Yes you are correct I want it to hang but I instead of hanging it messing itself up. I have applied Dforce Dynamic Surface to this cloth. But not sure what is messing this up on other clothes this method use to work fine. https://drive.google.com/file/d/17qv6n7C2doBKPiSwhOXy2CJTANtveNAO/view?usp=drive_link

  • Please teach me how you did this. Thankyou.

Well, for one thing, you have to save the asset as a prop rather than a figure (actually this isn't strictly necessary but it makes life easier).  Second, you need to turn the "self collide" to some very low value, like .01.  Alternatively you can turn it off altogether.  Outside of that it depends a great deal on the scene and the nature of the prop. You may want to try setting the collision item to your character if it is to drape from him/her, and play with those values. You'll almost certainly have to make adjustments as you go.  This will take you a few  tries to get the way you want it.

Let us know how this goes!

Try to first switch off  'Self Collide' on dynamic surfaces, then sim it again... I ever helped a guy to sim the case just with a product from Causam, you may refer to the settings as below:

    - fall on a surface - : https://i.postimg.cc/v8kwvQ88/SNAG-2023-3-14-0018.png
    - hang and fold -: https://i.postimg.cc/x8tWyFzb/SNAG-2023-3-14-0025.png
    - make subtle change with dforce modifier weight node -: https://i.postimg.cc/6QLx34Fb/SNAG-2023-3-14-0022.png

  • Hey Thankyou @Causam3D and @Crosswind for help. I am sharing the picture, this method worked and values were really helpful. If you know if I can change anything else to make it more better please let me know. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rIZ-qYVviDqA42iiUoI3goB6_BaKSMvi/view?usp=drive_link

  • In geenral it is important to make sure that there are no weight-maos or suface settings excluding soem parts from simulation. I would not think turning self-collide off was really essential, or desirable in that it then allows self-intersection, but i can't see your images to know what is going wrong.

  • @Richard Haseltine and @Barbult Hey Thanks for the message,Hope this link works. Everytime I run a simulation this is what it does. It is a basic Underwear in Genesis 8 Starter pack.

After all the adjustments it looks much better but I think there is still something missing.

  • So you are applying a dForce modifier yourself? The cklothing is quite old, it has been converted for successive generatuions of figures from (I think) the same mesh and pre-dates dForce, so it is quite possible it won't work. When I run a simulation I get a lot of complaints about edge lengths being smaller than the Collision offset - that means that dForce is being asked to stretch the edges out, to be greater than the offset, which in turn means it is adding more energy to the edges that has to be diffused away through the mesh (reducing energy is how the simulation works). I tried reducing the Colision Offset to avoid this, .01 seemed to work (though still a lot of warnings) and with the collision quality set to best and iterations raised to 16 I got a moderate result, though I think it is too soft (really, you would want a dForce add-on stiffening the binding) - ultimately I think you need to use a different model, though turning self-collision off will of course eliminate the whole problem (but also alter the behaviour of the item in a highly non-physical way).

Simplest way to deal with it from where you are is to make the surfaces silkier and/or less dense.  It isn't hanging like cloth at the moment.
See the skirt here; the density is something like 50 if I remember right.  Certainly no higher than that.

Oh this one... the draping result looks good but as Richard mentioned, it's not really a good one...  Actually if you want to keep Self Collide on, you may add high value to Velocity Smoothing otherwise it will shrink first with no figure or other object to collide. Here's some params for your further reference.

Sometimes I myself prefer to making it folded first, create a morph with it and go for a 2nd simulation. In this way, you can make more subtle changes with the draping result. Besides, the initial size, shape and position of such a garment influences the draping result as well, so better convert it to a Prop first, then it'll be easy for manipulation. Plus well using the existing morphs on it, and if you know some modeling / sculpting tool like ZB / Blender, you can finetune the result to make it even better.

Anyway, the more experiments you do, the more better results you're gonna have.

Apparently not as I'm also getting the access denied page. Each upload, for sharing, has to be set to be shared.

  • Thanks everyone for your guidance it does look way better than before. I never knew that this small things can make huge changes.

Yes I shared it with imgur later on.

dForce is really pretty good if you learn these little things.  I recall when I first started fooling around with it, most of what I posted was laced with profanity and insult.  That's just my nature :)
The next thing is to decide what you want to do with it.  If you want to focus on minor detail and create work wherein the cloth physics are themselves the focus of the image or animation, then it pays to tweak and tweak.  If what you're looking for is a background detail that enhances the main work or simply compliments it, then you won't need to go into as much detail.

Yes I realize. Google Drive used to default to sharing, not it does not. It can be confusing so I hope these will attach here. Well that was a pipe dream.
