Is there a way to click on the cloth, instead of the figure on the viewport?

Right - clicking on the clothing should bring up a dialogue box with options.

Or, another alternative - First, Ctrl + LMB Click figure's hip node to make it and its children nodes unselectable. Then move your mouse cursor to highlight which wearable you want to select in Viewport, and double-click LMB to select it...

Menu rather than dialogue. It usually offers only the base figure and the topmost fitted item (if there are multiple overlapping items at that point).

On the top selection of brushes bar, select the one for surfaces. Then touch on any desired surface. If you hold down the Ctrl key {I think, if not that one the Shift key} while selecting you can select more than one surface.
