Why Did I Do This Again?

For some reason I opted not to download Daz Studio 4.22 and the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials update last year. I can't remember why I was leery about doing it, though. Is the current general consensus that these things are relatively irritation-free and something I should go ahead and download? Or are they still icky for some reason? Thanks!

Unless your graphics card can't handle the newer Iray versions in 4.22.0 or 4.22.1 you should be okay. Save the .zips for the current version and its plugins in case you do need to go back.
I believe the G9 starter essentials updates just add things, so it shouldn't affect anything.
There are two product issues to be aware of, one of which is (as far as i know) entirely fixed with updates and the other of which is mostly fixed and easy to post-fix if not.
The environment maps from several of Flipmode's sets use a compression method that is not supported by the updated image library used by the new version of iray - as far as I am aware all have been updated to redownload and reinstall should fix that (if not the affected ones will render pink).
Many of out of Touch's hairs using their Hair Blending shader had an incorrect setting in a shared file, so if you install an updated product all should be good using DIM (if you use connect it's a matter of which file is loaded from the different products, a manual install toa separate content directory may also leave an outdated file). If the issue does remain for you (crash on render if one of the affected products is in the scene, usually) then it can be fixed by selecting the hair in the scene, selecting the hair in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane, then typing transm in the filter boix at the top of the pane to find the Transmitted colour property and clicking the icon to the left of its colour picker to remove any maps by selecting none in the menu that opens.
Hmmm. Y'know, I'm not really unhappy with my current version of Daz Studio (whatever preceeded 4.22), so maybe I'll just think about updating the Genesis 9 stuff, instead. I guess eventually something will come along that requires me to download 4.22, but I reckon I can postpone for the time being.
Interestingly (to me, anyway) I've really not used Genesis 9 figures much at all, despite buying products for Gen 9. This resistance might be rooted more in the impulse to scream "WHY did you change the way the head pose controls work AGAIN!?" than in the quality of the assets. Or maybe it's because I just really love Gen 8.
may be a good idea to back up the FBX plugin if you use that
I still cannot get anything useable in many of my other programs with the one in 4.22 in spite of fixes
I do have old programs though (iClone 6 for example) I have to use my saved 4.11 for
also if using Win7 don't upgrade past 4.21 if you want to use iray with a Nvidia card (CPU still works albeit slowly)
