IRay decal nodes and individual fiber hair

Is it possible to apply IRay decal nodes to hair made of individual strands instead of mesh card style hair? I've been pulling my hair out trying to find a way to get Decal nodes to render on these items. As you can see in my attachments it works alright when parented to the hair object of a hair that uses a mesh based system but does nothing to the individual fiber system. Is there any way that anyone knows of to get the decal node projection to render on both?

Haircards / mesh hair have polygons on their geometry while strand-based hairs don't have polygons but just polylines, so Iray Decal node is not able to project texture on them.
yeah I recognize that the "geometry" that is rendered is created by the shader along the curves and not practical geometry. I'm just wondering if there is a native solution or work around for this before jumping to Blender to extrude geometry along the fibers which other wise will be my next step.
