Garden Gnome/ Lawn Ornament

I missed @Sazzyazzca's request for a Lawn Ornament/ Garden gnome last year (https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/639181/kitschy-lawn-ornaments-please-especially-gnomes) however I stumbled across it a few days ago, and it rather tickled my fancy. However I simply can't model a garden gnome. So, I looked carefully at Thingiverse & saw that there were a number of models released under the Creative Commons licenses, and the one that attracted me was by MakerBot at Thingiverse. The mesh was released under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits modification & distribution.

I took the STL mesh, converted to OBJ, did some detriangulation and then UV mapped, created a texture & then a prop. So, please find attached a rather high poly (93k) prop that originated from a scanned concrete gnome.

The texture is intended to look like a fairly recently home painted gnome. It's about 20cm high.. What more can I say other than 'Ihope you smile as much with it as I did'.

Regards,

Richard

Thank you. I have looked at a sleeping gnome model, however won't proceed with it until I have created my own decimation routine to reduce the number of facets to a slightly more acceptable level. 570,000 facets is ridiculous for a gnome. Regards, Richard.

I know a program that does that.

    https://github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes

And here's a good video on how to use it.

Thank you. I hadn't been aware of that program. Looks really useful. I frequently have a good deal of hand re-meshing to do after using SolidWorks and exporting to STL and converting to obj. This may save a good deal of time with that, too.

As an aside, I first got involved with meshing models in 1988 with an early PC based finite element stress package. 200 elements (facets). It took nearly a week to generate the model.. Now, cutting the facets from quarter of a million to just a few thousand takes mere seconds. Amazing.

    Regards,

    Richard

@Faerly Womyn, the program worked nicely. Very fast & efficient.

I made a mistake afterwards & I'm still seething as a result. The mistake I made was to think that one of the world's most frustrating and unhelpful programs around could help. The mistake I made - I tried to use 'Blender' to unwrap the mesh to create a UV map. I'm still wound up by the mind boggling levels of infuriation built into it. And, not unexpectedly, I couldn't follow the step by step instructions to complete it beacuse every command referred to didn't exist, and none of the myriad of key-presses worked, so I barely stopped a few moments before punching my screen. I was sufficiently wound up that going to Carrara didn't help.

    Regards

    Richard

If you want to unwrap in blender and don't have specific requirements how just:

    1) Go to Modelling [tab]

    2) Select all [A]

    3) UV > Smart UV Project

    Done

And if you want to export the UV layout

    4) Go to UV Editting

    5) Select all (in left side)

    6) Export Layout

    Idiotic forum SW!!

Well. That is the first time I have ever had a single Blender command finish. I've only tried to do things with it for 31 hours. So, that's a fantastic advance. Is it normal for Blender to revert to a default directory as opposed to following the same ease of use as most Windows applications and look at the last one used? Gets wearing when you don't like the output, undo doesn't, you kill it and have to navigate the entire file path again. Regards, Richard.

In import & eksport menu, there is a 'recemt' in lower left.

Nothing like leveraging existing knowledge. Nothing remotely like it. Shame, would make learning quicker and infinitely less frustrating.
