Iray hanging on render

I recently see a lot of hangs in Iray when trying to render models with high subdivision counts on Genesis (sub 4 or 5). The render starts, and reaches a line about updating geometry in the history log, and then nothing else happens. Trying to cancel causes DS to hang completely. But it is not entirely deterministic - in many cases, models with subd 4 or 5 will render fine. I can't find a clear reason as to when this will happen and when not.

This is on Win 11, latest official DS version (not beta), 64GB RAM, 4090 gfx card

Any iodea what the cause might be, and how to work around the problem?

From the history panel:
Rendering in NVIDIA Iray
Compiling Shaders - 0/1
Rendering image
Rendering...
Iray (Scene Update) : Updating LPE labels
Iray (Scene Update) : Updating geometry contexts
Iray (Scene Update) : Updating geometry

There is nothing in the log.

Thanks for any help...

    How long are you waiting?

  • Longest time, I let it sit overnight - hours. Tried that various times. When it works, even with really complex scenes, it never takes anywhere near that long.

I would suggest monitoring RAM and VRAM when starting a render.

    I also get this sometimes.

    I also have 64gb ram but a 3090.

I have found it happens when I use mesh grabber and I think I grab a geoshell on the character by mistake and change that rather than a clothing item.

I have found that if I delete the geoshells the scene will then render normally.

No idea why it does this.

I have never had it happen on a scene that I have not used mesh grabber on.

  • I have it definitively happen without using mesh grabber. I tried removing all geoshells, but that does not seem to make a difference either.
