Can't select the main item

Normally when I select an item it selects the item then click again to select sub parts but suddenly it changed and now only selects the sub parts. If I try and select a figure it only selects parts (chest upper, head, etc) how do I change it back?

In Tool Settings pane, in Node Selection Mode... choose Root Node First.

It is already selected as shown in the screenshot attatched but doesn't select the main item
