[RELEASED] CC Talan for Genesis 9 [Commercial]

Oops! Forgot to post a sneak peek :D Ah well. CC Talan for Genesis 9 has been released!

He has human, elven and half-elven presets (which different skins). He's a forest elf variety, though he's snooty enough to be a high elf as well. As a little bonus there's some new shaping morphs for FE Tousled Layered Short Hair for Genesis 9 and 8 Male included because I love it so much on him.

    Can confirm Talan has a face that was made for eyerolling while scoffing at the petty concerns of mortals.

    A pale-skinned elf man with blond hair, clothes in pastel silk, and multiple pieces of silver jewelry set with purple gemstones. He is sitting on a throne in pastel velvet and silver decorations, and is looking off to the side while absent-mindedly playing with his necklace, apparently uninterested in what is going on in front of him. His expression is somewhere between bored and disgusted.

    As I said in another thread, you always provide great value with options (skins, makeups etc.), and the promo pictures are always excellent. A golden standard on how to show everything about the figure. And thank you for yeterday's pricing, too!

    Here's my small contribution quickly put together, but I'm sure I'll use him again.

    On another note, something I did with him is a little different than previous characters. I didn't think about it at the time, but it might make him a little heavier on a card than usual. Talan has 2 sets of HD morphs. One is at subD level 3 and one is at subD level 5. This could maybe cause issues if you have a full scene. I didn't have any doing the promos so I didn't think about it, but I have CPU fallback enabled and ran them overnights. Without CPU fallback enabled, if your scene goes over the memory available on the GPU, it can just crash without error reporting or anything. 

    Anyway, if you are having an issue with this, I've attached 2 shaping presets that will turn off the different morphs. Just drop them in with the other shaping presets. I'd suggest starting with just turned off the 5's. Also, if you do have this issue and this resolves it for you, please let me know here, and I'll do an official update.

  • Oh, well, in that case, make sure he's not set at a level your card can't handle :D I think in testing after subD 4 on G9, only the biggest cards could handle it.

  • SUPER quick render of Talan in the default FilaToon shaders. Used the skin preset for all his skin zones, general for his eyes, and on the hair I used the hair preset on all but the scalp which I hid.

    The longest thing was setting up the lights, but I just wanted to get this out there :D I'm super excited about the FilaToon shader and new shapes (they blend well!) and wanted to throw something out real fast.

    Also, his alt textures for the half-elf and elf version of him use the translucency layer to add the color other than human, so if you want those in FilaToon, you'll need to swap out the base map for the translucency or get a little more fancy with it. I think the best version I found was a 50/50 layer of the regular base map with the translucency layer, but I haven't done THAT much experimentation with it yet. I might do an update, but he's a pretty big download already.

    Turns out the user wasn't using Iray.

    For the record, I do not support 3DL at all. The engine is different enough from Iray that I would approach morphs completely differently (not to mention the materials). However, after testing, this is an issue with HD 5 morphs specifically in 3DL. With Talan I have 2 sets of HD that dial in, one at 3 and one at 5. If you want to render in 3DL, please use the presets I provided above to turn off the HD 5 morphs (or just look for the Talan morphs labeled HD5 at the end and turn them off).

    Yes, as with displacement 3Delight can divide the mesh "as far as needed" and so it will apply any active HD morphs regardless of the level settings.

    Where in the DAZ Studio runtime environment (specific directory, please) do you "just drop them in with the other shaping presets?"

    Please release a product update with subD level 5 turned OFF by default for CC Talan.

    Content developers have an obligation to the DAZ Studio customer base to follow the rules of both the Iray and 3Delight render engines to prevent system crashes.

    You can put the shaping presets anywhere you like and they will work, but in my folder structure, I would put them under the character folder in a folder People\Genesis 9\Characters\ChangelingChick\CC Talan\Shaping

    Alternately, if you intend to never use iRay instead of 3DL, you can simply delete the HD5 files from the data folder. I have them clearly labelled for just that purpose. They are:

    • data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 9\Base\Morphs\ChangelingChick\CC Talan\CCTalan_head_bs_HeadDetails_HD5.dhdm
    • data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 9\Base\Morphs\ChangelingChick\CC Talan\CCTalan_body_bs_BodyDetails_HD5.dhdm
    • data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 9\Base\Morphs\ChangelingChick\CC Talan\CCTalan_head_bs_HeadDetails_HD5.dsf
    • data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 9\Base\Morphs\ChangelingChick\CC Talan\CCTalan_body_bs_BodyDetails_HD5.dsf

    Content developers have an obligation to provide the product they present. Daz actually covers the support part of the deal, but I make these threads specifically to support with extra stuff (like supporting unsupported uses of the product, like yours). The product presented in the promotional images for Talan is an HD5 Iray character. Removing the files would make the promos inaccurate. If I were to update it, I'd have to rerender 113 images to make those promos again. Not to mention that everyone else who bought him would wonder why his details were suddenly lesser. Support for 3DL isn't indicated anywhere on the character's page, and it hasn't been a requirement at Daz in years. I will not be updating this product to diminish its quality to support a render engine that I do not support. However, I appreciate that you want to use him, so I have provided the best support I can that does not diminish the product for anyone else who bought it in the way of presets that you can apply or the files you can delete.

    As a service to DAZ customers who continue to use the 3Delight render engine, in your future product promo pages please indicate, as you have above, instructions for removing components that will casue the DAZ Studio interface to crash.

  • For the record, this is not something that is the same across all users. It will be dependent on the system, which has always been the case. I specifically keep HD morphs separate from my base res morphs for just this reason-- to accomodate users.

    Does the character have 3Delight materials? I don't see any, so some adjustment is to be expected anyway.

    For the record, once a DAZ customer identifies an issue that causes the DAZ Studio interface to crash, even if it's only one customer, common courtesy dictates that you address the issue for all customers.  A simple disclaimer on a product page saying, "This product uses HD5 morphs that may not be compatible with the 3Delight render engine.  If this product causes the DAZ Studio interface to crash, remove all HD5 components from ........"

  • Any references to 3Delight on the description of my products will make it come up in searches for 3Delight, and since most customers don't read descriptions (and few pay attention to What's Included lists), this will cause more issues than it fixes. At best, it would be a wash. This isn't the first HD5 product I've released (that was back on G3 when I did support 3DL). Again, this is not a problem with my product. This is a problem with it being used in a way it was not designed for. I cannot be expected to anticipate every way users will use my product that I don't intend, and if I did, the descriptions would be a novel (and I'm already a little overly verbose). The number of problems users have come up with by doing weird things with my stuff is pretty long at this point. What I do to counter that is make these threads (before the product goes on sale) to answer any questions that come up and offer extra support. I understand that it's frustrating for you, but I really have thought through a lot of scenarios on this and other issues that come up. 

    As his materials don't work in 3DL at all (nor would they without new maps and his install zip is already over 1GB), you'll need to make your own character preset for him anyway, and I'd be happy to walk you through that, unfortunately, any references to unsupported uses on the product page implies support.

    Here are two renders using "your" product with "your" materials- one in 3Delight at subD 3 and the other in Iray at subD 5.

    As far as I'm concerned, subD 5 "brings nothing to the party" as they say.

  • The other 600+ people that bought him may have a different opinion. Good lighting is a huge factor in iray, and honestly, I can't even tell which of your images is which.

    Two solutions have been provided, and I maintain my offer to provide a walkthrough of saving out a 3DL character preset or Scene Subset (which is easier, but not to my personal standards).

    Thanks for the solutions.

    The offending .HD5 components have been permanently removed from my runtime.

    Everything now runs to my liking under the 3Delight (default) render engine now that the crashes have been resolved.

    Yes, it does. 

    3Delight hasn't been the default render engine in years now. It was the original, but it was replaced with iray as the default I think 3 years ago.

    Additional Information:

    Only DS 4.23.0.1 crashes.

    DS 4.22.0.19 does not crash.
