What is the best way to make a horde of orcs? I would presume instancing of some type, what program, script, etc would di it the best?

I thought there might have been a now-crowd set of orcs, but apparently not.
Ultrascatter would work for this (creating instances and spreading them around according to various parameters). You'd need a few base orcs to instance from, to avoid too much repetition:

thanks..that's GREAT ! Orc hordes on the horizon.
Houdini.
Easiest is to get some Mommy Orcs and some Daddy Orcs, and some goblin brandy, and...
Actually, I was just going to note that the word can be spelled several ways, and you can find 3D assets sold under the spellings Orc or Ork, and there's even a good-sized series of figures and accessories by Sixius1 that's sold under the name Orkz...
I think you've been recommended the best script for the horde creation.
If you need a regimented array (say skeleton warriors to repulse the horde), I did a simple linear array script here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7341776/#Comment_7341776. Much simpler with far fewer options, but the resulting array of instances can be rotated and moved as one.

There's Massive from Weta which was designed for making hordes of orcs. Licences seem to start at $3500.
if I recall from Tolkien, they were grown from the earth (Searching suggests he couldn't decide)

hmmm. I'm balking at an increase of DAZ+ to $120. Probably will pass on this Massive money thing for now. Although I've spent far more than that on DAZ stuff over the years.
weren't those Sixus1 Orkz released quite a few years ago? Like a long time ago, but they have new SKU numbers here. I do like them. I may even have them buried in the archives somewhere.
cool. thanks.
cool. thanks.
Not to mention the confusion over hoard/horde, though I think Daz products usually get it right.
appently that's changed with the lord of the rings tv series they have females and kids now and want to live happy familes type don't haqve netflix but seen a lot about it on net flix. The ones in the warhammer universes thought they were basicly fungi and sprouted them and they're capable of regrowth gretchin are same though in blood bowel there are female ones as cheerleaders with lady bumps
it'd take awhile but if you used billboard builder from code 66 and rendered single orcs in different poses as background orcs save a bit of space and then just use a couple for closeups so it isn't a strain to render the full scene
there\s a few big scenes like this I'd like to do too trying to work out how to there's few tried but even after several hours of it not even starting to render given up out of frostration just ended up doing simple pinups instead but want to do some scifi/fantasy epic larger scenes
Yes, and as a result they're very lightweight and there's even a lo-rez version at only 4460 polys vs 18K for the base Genesis mesh or 30k for Genesis 9, and with much lighter texture maps. Great for filling out backgrounds/crowds, and still look fine with an iray shader like NGS Anagenesis 2.
I would just ask Saruman if he can loan you some ...
... or consider billboards. In front of the billboard horde add low poly orcs, then put high poly orc close up. Remember the orcs should have diversity so different orc products can work together. Also you can Decimate orcs, although that's a very elvlsh thing to do.
You can also resample textures to a smaller size in your photo editor and substitute them on your figure.

I forgot to menton Texture Atlas (however i have never used it with Genesis 3 or 8 and I am pretty sure you must subdivision at zero.
Right click on the Surfaces tab to select Texture Atlas from the sub-menu which will pop-up the Texture Atlas window.
